International friendlies Acca of the Day
Sweden vs Albania betting tips
Friends Arena, Stockholm
After both were beaten in their first friendlies of 2024 last week, who will claim a victory in Stockholm?
On Thursday night, Sweden were smashed 5-2 by Portugal in Guimarães, conceding 5+ in an international for only the ninth time (post-WWII), most-recently doing so against Germany in 2013.
Viktor Gyökeres and Gustaf Nilsson’s goals at Estádio D. Afonso Henriques was scant consolation, as Jon Dahl Tomasson’s first match in charged turned into a bit of a nightmare.
This though was merely a continuation of the Blågult’s miserable 2023, in which they won only three of their eight qualifiers, thereby missing out on a first European Championships since 1996.
Having previously been relegated to Nations League C in 2022, Sweden also have some not-so glamorous third-tier fixtures against Slovakia, Estonia an Azerbaijan to look forward to later in the year.
So, even though this is a friendly, and they don’t have a Euros to look prepare for, Tomasson will feel victory in front of a home crowd, as sparse as it’s likely to be, is vitally important.
Albania meantime will feature at this summer’s tournament, qualifying for only the second time ever, set to take on Spain, Italy and Croatia in something of a group of death.
With that on the horizon, Sylvinho would’ve been concerned on Friday night as his team were easily beaten 3-0 by Chile at Stadio Ennio Tardini, ending the Eagles’ nine-match unbeaten sequence.
This clash at Friends Arena will be just a sixth meeting between these two nations and first for 15 years, with Sweden cruising to a 4-1 victory at Råsunda back then, winning three of those five previous encounters overall.
However, even with home advantage, Swedish supporters heading to Solna may not be feeling particularly confident ahead of this one.
Cyprus vs Serbia betting tips
Georgios Karapatakis AEK Arena, Larnaca
As they prepare for their maiden European Championships appearance, can Serbia claim their first win of 2024?
On Thursday, in a controversial friendly, given that their hosts are currently banned from FIFA and UEFA competition, Serbia were smashed 4-0 by international football exiles Russia at VTB Arena.
Milan Gajić's red card after just 20 minutes in Moscow, that also conceded a penalty, far from helping their cause.
As alluded to, later this year, Serbia will feature at a first Euros as an independent nation, with Dragan Stojković's side drawn alongside England, Slovenia and Denmark in an open Group C.
Slightly concerningly, the Eagles have won only two of their last eight, a ratio they’ll be looking to improve in Larnaca.
This seems the most-likely outcome, given that Cyprus have never even come close to qualifying for any major tournament, losing each of their last ten qualifiers, conceding 36 goals and scoring only four.
On Thursday, Temur Ketsbaia’s team were held to a 1-1 draw by fellow-minnows Latvia, taking the lead through Ioannis Pittas, but denied victory by a late equaliser.
So, ahead of this one, Serbia have won their last two meetings with Cyprus, most-recently prevailing 3-1 in Užice eight years ago, with a very comfortable away win expected at Georgios Karapatakis AEK Arena.
Bolivia vs Andorra betting tips
19 May 1956 Stadium, Annaba
The brand-new FIFA Series’ primary purpose is to organise friendlies between teams from different FIFA confederations, and in what other walk of life would Bolivia and Andorra go head-to-head?
Bolivia are perennially CONMEBOL’s whipping boys, not qualifying for the World Cup since USA ‘94, winning only one of their 30 Copa América matches since a run to the 1997 final on home soil.
Once again, this summer, la Verde are widely expected to endure yet another group stage exit, set to take on United States in Arlington, Uruguay in East Rutherford and then Panama in Orlando.
In fairness to Antônio Carlos Zago’s side, they were competitive in Friday night’s clash against Algeria, with Carmelo Algarañaz and José Sagredo on target, before the hosts won it 3-2 in Algiers deep into injury time.
Nevertheless, Bolivia have won only two of their last 18 matches, these against Saudi Arabia and Peru, although this should be a very winnable fixture for them.
That’s because Andorra are one of UEFA’s true minnows, claiming victory in only seven of their 150 competitive fixtures, failing to win any of their last 14, dating back to a 1-0 victory in Liechtenstein in September 2022.
This streak continued on Thursday, although Koldo Álvarez’s side will be delighted with the 1-1 draw the earned against AFCON semi-finalists South Africa, taking a shock early lead through Ricard Fernández.
Still, the highest-ranked team Andorra have beaten since June 2017 are St. Kitts & Nevis, currently 147th in the FIFA World Rankings, so Bolivia, in 86th, should easily win this clash at 19 May 1956 Stadium.
Montenegro vs North Macedonia betting tips
Mardan Sports Complex, Antalya
These two Eastern European teams are pretty evenly-matched, making this clash in Antalya tough to call.
Since qualifying for Euro 2020, their first-ever major tournament, North Macedonia have found results hard to come by, winning only ten of their last 30 competitive fixtures, only managing to beat Malta throughout 2023.
On Friday, Blagoja Milevski’s team failed to start the new calendar year with a win, held to a 1-1 draw by Moldova, taking the lead through Bojan Miovski’s fantastic finish, only to concede a worldie late on.
This time, can the Red Lynxes claim a victory?
Montenegro meantime did beat Belarus 2-0 on Thursday, thanks to goals from Adam Marušić and then Nikola Krstović.
The Brave Falcons have still never qualified for a major tournament, with new manager Robert Prosinečki tasked with changing that in the coming years, making a winning start to his tenure.
North Macedonia have won their last two meetings with Montenegro, 2-1 in 2010 and 4-1 in 2015, so they might just kick off at Mardan Sports Complex as slight-favourites.
Azerbaijan vs Bulgaria betting tips
Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium, Baku
Neither Azerbaijan nor Bulgaria have enjoyed very many victories in recent years but, after both were victorious on Friday, will there be a winner here?
Azerbaijan are hosting this branch of the FIFA Series, making home advantage count against Mongolia three nights ago but only just, requiring a 93rd minute winner from Bahlul Mustafazada to snatch victory.
This was Arif Asadov’s first game in interim charge, after Gianni De Biasi was sacked last year, despite the fact he led them to a memorable 3-0 qualifying win over Sweden in November.
Nevertheless, Azerbaijan have only won nine of their last 45 fixtures, including friendlies, against European-based opposition, so can they add to that tally here?
Bulgaria meantime were also 1-0 winners over minnows in Baku last time out, with Kiril Despodov the only scorer against Tanzania at Dalğa Arena.
The Lions have not qualified for any major tournament for 20 years, while they were winless in 11 prior to Friday’s victory, hence why they changed manager, with Ilian Iliev making a winning start.
These two teams last met in Euro 2016 qualifying, with Bulgaria winning both times, prevailing 2-1 in Baku and then 2-0 in Sofia, so will this clash at Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium go the same way?
