Ecuador vs Italy betting tips

Red Bull Arena, New Jersey

After claiming victory in their first friendly of 2024 on Thursday, Italy will now travel over 1,000 miles north from Fort Lauderdale to New Jersey, in search of another victory.

In mid-week, Luciano Spalletti’s team battled to a 2-1 victory over Venezuela in Miami, with Mateo Retegui the scorer of both, the latter coming just nine minutes from time.

Gianluigi Donnarumma’s first half penalty save was also a highlight, doing so for the first time in a national team shirt since the Euros Final.

Gli Azzurri will be hoping to retain the Henri Delaunay Trophy this summer, although they’ve been drawn into something of a group of death, set to face Albania in Dortmund, Spain in Gelsenkirchen and Croatia in Leipzig.

Needing to be at their best come the summer, will Italy claim another friendly victory here?

Ecuador meantime should provide even sterner opposition than their South American counterparts, after la Tricolor beat Guatemala 2-0 on Thursday, thanks to goals from John Yeboah and Gonzalo Plata.

Félix Sánchez Bas’ side have now lost just one of their last ten fixtures, sat fifth in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying, despite a points deduction, going into June’s Copa América full of confidence.

At that tournament, Ecuador will take on Venezuela, Jamaica and Mexico, favourites to top Group B, dreaming of reaching the final for the first time ever, last getting to the semis in 1993.

This’ll be just a third meeting between these two nations, with Italy 2-0 winners at the Sapporo Dome during the 2002 World Cup, before the pair drew 1-1 in East Rutherford three years later.

Returning to the New York Metropolitan area, nine miles south at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, can Ecuador claim a notable scalp against the European champions?

San Marino vs St Kitts & Nevis betting tips

Stadio Olimpico di Serravalle, San Marino

For the second time this week, San Marino and St Kitts & Nevis will go head-to-head in Serravalle.

San Marino have never won a competitive game in their entire history, drawing five and losing 171 while, when friendlies are taken into account, they’ve recorded just a solitary victory, beating Liechtenstein 1-0 in 2004.

Desperate to end their two-decade long wait for a win, the FSGC have organised friendlies against some of the world’s minnows in recent years, but to no avail.

In 2022, la Serenissima were held to a goalless draw by Seychelles at home before, later that year, traveling to Saint Lucia for a double-header, drawing the first 1-1 before a 1-0 defeat in Gros Islet three days later.

This month, they’re up against another Caribbean nation, with St Kitts & Nevis the visitors, first going head-to-head last Wednesday.

The historic moment seemed very much on when, 20 minutes in, the home side were awarded a penalty that Filippo Berardi expertly converted; the fourth successive match in which his nation have scored, a record.

However, the joy was short-lived, with the Sugar Boyz leading 2-1 by the interval, Tyquan Terrell and Andre Burley both on target from corners, before Harry Panayiotou sealed the win in the second half.

Just last year, Austin Huggins’ team made their CONCACAF Gold Cup debut, ousting Curaçao and French Guinea on penalties in the prelims, before losing all three matches, conceding 14 goals and scoring zero.

Nevertheless, St Kitts proved to be too strong for San Marino on Wednesday, so will fancy their chances of another victory at Stadio Olimpico di Serravalle as the pair reconvene.

Guatemala vs Venezuela betting tips

Shell Energy Stadium, Houston

In Sunday’s other friendly down in Texas, Venezuela will be aiming to get back to winning ways.

On Thursday, la Vinotinto were beaten 2-1 by Italy in Miami, with Salomón Rondón seeing a first half penalty saved, Darwin Machís then finding the target, only for Gli Azzurri to snatch victory late on.

Before this, Fernando Batista’s team had lost only one of their previous 13 outings, currently sat fourth in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying table, aiming to reach the tournament for the first time ever.

Before that campaign resumes in September, Venezuela will feature at the Copa América, set to take on Ecuador, Mexico and Jamaica, aiming to get out of their group for only the fifth time since 1967.

Guatemala meantime missed the chance to qualify for Copa América, winning only one of their four CONCACAF Nations League fixtures last year.

Los Chapines then began this near year with a 2-0 defeat to Ecuador in New Jersey, meaning Luis Fernando Tena’s side have only four of their last 16 outings, these against Costa Rica, Cuba, Guadeloupe and El Salvador.

When these two teams met in Connecticut last June, Venezuela ran out 1-0 winners, Yangel Herrera the match-winner, with a similar outcome expected in Houston.

United States vs Mexico betting tips

AT&T Stadium, Dallas

The most eagerly-anticipated international fixture taking place anywhere on Sunday is, without doubt, the CONCACAF Nations League Final between the region’s two dominant teams.

The United States have won both previous editions of the Nations League, retaining their title in Las Vegas last June, but their dreams of a three-peat almost went up in smoke during Thursday night’s semi-final.

Just 31 seconds into the clash, Jamaica broke the deadlock, Greg Leigh bundling home at the back post, with this the fastest goal the U.S. have ever conceded.

1-0 is how it remained in Arlington, with USA staring down the barrel of defeat, until, in the 96th minute, Christian Pulisic’s corner was flicked on by Miles Robinson, with the ball ricocheting in for an own goal.

This forced extra time, in which Haji Wright proved to be the hero, scoring six minutes into the additional half hour and again 13 minutes later, as the Stars and Stripes advanced 3-1, but that does not begin to tell the story.

Later on, at the same venue in the second semi-final, many were predicting an upset, but this did not come to pass, with Mexico making light work of Panama, prevailing 3-0.

Quick-fire goals from Edson Álvarez and then Julián Quiñones on the cusp of half time gave el Tri firm grip over the tie, before Orbelín Pineda’s audacious lob mid-way through the second 45 secured victory.

This means CONCACAF’s two heavyweight teams will go head-to-head for silverware, with USA hoping to extend their current streak of six matches unbeaten against their fierce rivals.

In recent times, Gregg Berhalter’s team have had the upper-hand in this fixture, defeating el Tri 3-2 in the inaugural Nations League Final of 2019, before a thumping tres a cero win in last summer’s semi-final.

During this period, there have been U.S. wins in the 2021 Gold Cup Final and a World Cup qualifier in Cincinnati, with Mexico’s last victory coming five years ago, a fact Jaime Lozano is under huge pressure to change.

So, will USA complete the Nations League three-peat at AT&T Stadium, or will Mexico get their hands on this trophy for the very first time?

Jamaica vs Panama betting tips

AT&T Stadium, Dallas

Prior to the main event in Arlington, Thursday’s two beaten semi-finalists will meet in the third-place play-off.

Of course, neither team wanted to be involved in this fixture, but both had to come through quarter-final encounters back in November, thereby securing their place at this summer’s Copa América.

Panama smashed fierce rivals Costa Rica 6-1 on aggregate last year, so will make just their second Copa América appearance in June, also qualifying in 2016.

Los Canaleros are in Group C, set to take on Uruguay in Miami, the United States in Atlanta and Bolivia in Orlando, with the latter of those three fixtures by far their most-winnable game.

Nevertheless, this team have been impressive under Thomas Christiansen, most-notably reaching last summer’s Gold Cup Final, so will be no push-overs at that tournament.

Jamaica meantime have previously featured at the Copa Américas of 2015 and 2016, losing all six games, conceding nine goals and scoring zero.

Thus, the Reggae Boyz’s aim this June will be to score a goal and then, after that, get some points on the board, scheduled to take on Mexico in Houston, Ecuador in Las Vegas and Venezuela in Austin.

Under Heimir Hallgrímsson, this team are improving, emphasised by the fact they dumped out Canada on away goals back in November, before very nearly defeating the U.S. in mid-week.

In terms of this third-place play-off, Jamaica have won only two of their last 18 encounters with Panama, although this does include a 1-0 win in the quarter-finals of the 2019 Gold Cup.

On the flip side, la Marea Roja have claimed victory in four of their last five meetings with the Reggae Boyz, including beating them twice in World Cup qualifying, 3-0 in Kingston and 3-2 in Panama City.

This clash at AT&T Stadium though is tough to call.
