Italy′s Road to Qualification
Having failed to qualify for back-to-back World Cups, defeated in play-offs by Sweden and North Macedonia, Italians are not taking qualification for granted, and their road to this summer’s Euros was far from smooth.
The reigning champions began their campaign with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of England in Naples, before featuring at last summer’s Nations League Finals, dumped out in the semi-finals by Spain in Enschede, before Roberto Mancini surprisingly resigned as head coach to be replaced by Scudetto-winning manager Luciano Spalletti.
Italy did just about enough to pip the Ukrainians to second place in Group C, courtesy of their superior head-to-head record, with all supporters delighted they avoided the play-offs and have been drawn into something of a group of death this summer.
The holders will need to improve if they’re to make another deep run.

Italy’s Key Players
Gianluigi Donnarumma- Gianluigi Donnarumma was named player of the tournament at the most-recent Euros, saving two penalties in the final shootout win over England, thereby becoming the first goalkeeper to win the award.
Still only 25, he has already accumulated 61 caps for the national team and has started each of Gli Azzurri’s last 41 competitive fixtures, the most-recent one he missed came in November 2019 and he has been in fine form for PSG this season leading to many calling him the best keeper in the world.
Alessandro Bastoni- The Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini era, which formed the bed-rock of Italy’s success at Euro 2020, is very much over, with Alessandro Bastoni in line to be this team’s next great defender following his outstanding performances for Inter Milan in last season’s Champions League.
For the national team, Bastoni has just 22 caps to his name, but will add to that this summer, the only question being who will be his partner: Francesco Acerbi, Gianluca Mancini and Alessandro Buongiorno the leading candidates.
Nicolo Barella- Given that Italy continue to lack a reliable goal-scorer, either from out-wide or through the middle, they could be reliant on goals from midfield, with Nicolò Barella the most-likely source.
At Euro 2020, he lined-up alongside Jorginho and Marco Verratti, forming a formidable trio, but this unit could look a lot different, given that Jorginho’s role has diminished under Spalletti, while Verratti hasn’t been called up since moving to Al-Arabi in Qatar last August.

Italy′s Euro 2024 FAQs
Have Italy ever qualified for the European Championships before?
Of course! This summer will be Italy's 11th appearance at the European Championships, the most-recent edition they did not qualify for coming in 1992.
Have Italy ever won the European Championships before?
Yes! Italy are the holders, after defeating England in the 2021 final at Wembley, their second European Championships title, previously beating Yugoslavia in the 1968 final on home soil.
Do Italy have a good record against the Euro 2024 group stage opponents?
Italy have won all 4 previous meetings with Albania, most-recently beating them 3-1 in a friendly in Tirana in 2022.
Meanwhile, Italy have won 10 of 36 previous encounters with Spain, losing 14, with la Roja winning the last two, both coming in UEFA Nations League semi-finals. This summer will be the 5th successive Euros at which these Iberian rivals have clashed; Spain smashed Italy 4-0 in the 2012 final, but Gli Azzurri have won both Euro encounters subsequently.
Amazingly, Italy have never won any of their 8 fixtures against Croatia, each of the last 3 ending in draws, including a clash at Euro 2012.
What are the odds for Italy to win Euro 2024?
Italy are priced at 14/1 to win Euro 2024, making them 7th favourites, aiming to become only the second team in history to retain this trophy.
