After the glory years of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s faded away. Netherlands struggled for any sort of success in the past decade and even failed to qualify for Euro 2016. However, they are once again building up a solid squad that is getting close to competing with the best of the best.
Ronald Koeman is back in the Netherlands dugout for the second time in his career and will be hoping to replicate the success he had as a player with the Dutch national side back in the 80s.

Netherlands Euro 2024 Top Tip
The Netherlands have been drawn alongside France in Group D, meaning they may struggle to finish in top spot. However, France have shown in major tournaments of late that they can be prone to a slip-up in the group stage, potentially opening the do to Netherlands securing top spot.
Regardless, even if the Netherlands finish 2nd in their group, they will be a tough opponent for whoever they face in the last-16, especially if there are some upsets elsewhere in the group phase.
However, given the quality of sides like France, England, Spain and Portugal, the Dutch outfit may find it hard to get past the quarter-final stage of the competition.

Netherlands’ Road to Qualification
Netherlands were drawn in Group B for the Euro 2024 qualifiers alongside France, Greece, Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar.
As was to be expected, the Netherlands struggled against France in qualifying, losing both of their meetings to hand Les Bleus top spot in Group B.
On a more positive note, Netherlands were able to win their remaining six group games while conceding just one goal in the process.

Netherlands’ Road to the Final
Anyone who is looking at backing the Netherlands for success will want to know how they can get to the final. Their paths are determined by where they finish in the group, either first, second or third - and here are the various permutations that they will have to navigate.
Round of 16
- If Netherlands win Group D - Their last 16 game will be against the runner up of Group F, which will most likely be Czech Republic. This game will be played on June 30.
- If Netherlands are runners up in Group D - Their last 16 game will come against the runner-up of Group E - most likely Slovakia or Romania. This game will be played on July 2.
- If Netherlands finish third in Group D (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Their last 16 game will be against either the winner of Group E - Belgium, Slovakia, Romania, TBD - or the winner of Group C - England, Denmark, Slovenia, Serbia. These games will be played on June 29 or July 2.
Quarter-Finals
- If Netherlands win Group D - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group E winner vs one of the third-place teams from Group A/B/C/D. On paper, their most likely opponent will be Belgium. This game will be played on July 6.
- If Netherlands are runners up in Group D - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group F winner vs one of the 3rd-place teams from Group A/B/C/. Their most likely opponent would be Portugal (coming in as Group F winners). This game will be played on July 5.
- If Netherlands finish third in Group D (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - They will either face the winner of the last-16 clash between Group A’s winner and C’s runners-up or the winner of the game between Group A’s runner-up and Group B’s runner-up. These games will be played on July 5 or July 6.
Semi-Finals
- If Netherlands win Group D - Many assumptions have to be made by the time we get to this stage, but if things go as expected, Netherlands will face either England, Switzerland or Italy in the semi-final. This game will be played on July 10.
- If Netherlands are runners up in Group D - Again, a lot of assumptions need to be made here but Netherlands’ most likely opponents are Germany or Spain. This game will be played on July 9.
- If Netherlands finish third in Group D (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Given how the third-place teams are put into the knockout phase, Netherlands could face any of the teams mentioned above. These games will be played on July 9 or July 10.
Final
- If Netherlands win Group D - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of Germany, Spain, France or Portugal - of said clubs, France seem the most likely to make it to the final. The final will be played on July 14.
- If Netherlands are runners up in Group D - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of Belgium, France, England or Italy.
- If Netherlands finish third in Group D (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Netherlands could be put onto either side of the draw depending on how they rank among the third-place teams, meaning they could face any of the big hitters we have mentioned above.
Netherlands’ Key Players
Virgil van Dijk - Netherlands’ main man heading into Euro 2024 is Liverpool centre-back, Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman’s ability to continue playing at a world-class level had been called into question over the last few seasons as Liverpool struggled for form. However, Van Dijk has been immense across the 2023/24 campaign for the Reds, including putting in a match-winning display in the League Cup final vs Chelsea. Given Netherlands’ best chance of getting far in this competition will come from their defensive stability, Van Dijk will need to bring his A-game to Euro 2024.
Georginio Wijnaldum - Despite being 33 years of age and no longer plying his trade in Europe, Wijnaldum is expected to be a key player for the Netherlands this summer. The former Liverpool midfielder brings a goalscoring threat to the national side that no other player available to Ronald Koeman currently does. Wijnaldum has scored 27 goals in 90 outings for the Netherlands at the time of writing - only four less than Wesley Sneijder. This is likely why Koeman opted to call the ageing star back up to the national side for the March friendlies.
Mephis Depay - After breaking out at Lyon, Mephis Depay has never really rediscovered his goalscoring boots for any of his following clubs. For his country, though, Depay delivers on a consistent basis. The 30-year-old has 44 goals in 88 appearances for the Oranje, making him the second-highest goalscorer in the country’s history - six behind Robin Van Persie.
