Portugal Euro 2024 Top Tip
We think Portugal have the second-most talented squad at this tournament and, with France on the opposite side of the draw, assuming both top their respective groups, we fancy Roberto Martínez’s team to get all the way to the final.

Portugal′s Road to Qualification
This is the 38th major tournament qualifying cycle that Portugal have been involved in and, for the first time ever, they ended a campaign with a perfect record, only the eighth side to ever qualify for Euros in this fashion.
Roberto Martínez’s team enjoyed ten wins out of ten in 2023, scoring 36 goals and conceding only two, most-notably smashing Luxembourg 9-0 at Estádio Algarve, their biggest-ever victory, surpassing a trio of 8-0 successes from ‘94, ‘99 and 2003.
Both goals a Seleção das Quinas conceded came when Slovakia visited Porto, prevailing 3-2, keeping a very impressive nine clean sheets.
It must be caveated that Group J was a particularly weak section, with Slovakia finishing second, while Luxembourg, Iceland and Bosnia were all beaten in the play-offs, emphasising their limitations.
Portugal’s winning streak then continued in their first friendly of 2024, steamrollering Sweden 5-2 Guimarães, before a shock 2-0 defeat to Slovenia in Ljubljana five days later, albeit with a much-changed side.
So, it could be argued that this team have not been seriously tested since crashing out of the World Cup against Morocco, but they certainly boast more than enough talent to go all the way.

Portugal’s Key Players
Ruben Dias- Picking only three key players certainly wasn’t easy, given how stacked this side is, but Rúben Dias’ quality at the back means he must be mentioned.
The centre-back has started 15 of their last 17 competitive fixtures and is one of the first names on the team-sheet, set to line-up alongside 41 year old Pepe, who will need to hold the team together, while full-backs such as João Cancelo and Raphaël Guerreiro bomb forward.
Dias was certainly one of the unsung heroes in Manchester City’s treble-winning side, making 78 appearances for the Sky Blues since the start of last season, and is under-the-radar one of the best centre-backs on the planet, and Portugal will need him to be at his best if they’re going to go all the way.
Bernardo Silva- While this team has an array of midfielders and attackers in their ranks, Bernardo Silva is possibly the most-important, given that he combines both high-level skill with being able to function in a system.
While Rafael Leão, João Félix and others may be more explosive, Silva is so important, because he offers defensive awareness, which will be key in low-scoring tournament knockout ties.
Of course, it shouldn’t be forgotten, Silva is also a huge threat going forward, scoring 11 times for his country, three of which came in qualifying, whilst also scoring nine times for Manchester City this season.
Cristiano Ronaldo- Given that no man has won more international caps or scored more international goals than Cristiano Ronaldo, he remains a key figure in this team, despite now being 39 years old.
In qualifying, Ronaldo scored ten goals in just nine appearances, bagging four braces, taking his tally to 128 goals at international level, having broken Ali Daei’s record of 106 against Republic of Ireland in 2021.
It appears as though Ronaldo will lead the line this summer, at what’ll surely be his final major tournament, and having already scored at five different editions of the Euros, you wouldn’t back against him making that six.
