They secured a last-16 spot at Euro 2016 and qualified for the following tournament in 2020, where they were knocked out at the group stage. Slovakia finished third in their group at Euro 2020, but did not accumulate enough points to make it into the knockout phase.

Slovakia Euro 2024 Top Tip
Despite their limited experience in the competition, Slovakia are likely to make it into the knockout phase this summer.
Belgium will almost certainly top Group E, but Slovakia have a solid chance of beating Romania and Ukraine to secure 2nd place and a spot in the last-16.
Slovakia made it into the last-16 on their tournament debut in 2016 and were unlucky not to repeat the feat four years later when they finished 3rd.

Slovakia’s Road to Qualification
Slovakia were drawn in Group J for their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign alongside Portugal, Luxembourg, Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Liechtenstein.
Slovakia finished 2nd in their group, behind a Portugal side who went unbeaten in their 10 qualifying outings.
Slovakia, meanwhile, won seven, drew one (vs Luxembourg) and lost two (both vs Portugal). However, Slovakia will take some pride in the fact that both their outings vs Portgual were very tight games - losing 1-0 and 3-2 respectively.
When are Slovakia’s Euro 2024 games?
Slovakia will play three Euro 2024 group games. The opponents and dates can be found below:
- Group C - Belgium vs Slovakia, June 17.
- Group C - Slovakia vs Ukraine, June 21.
- Group C - Slovakia vs Romania, June 26.
Slovakia’s Road to the Final
Anyone who is looking at backing Slovakia for success will want to know how they can get to the final. Their paths are determined by where they finish in the group, either first, second or third - and here are the various permutations that they will have to navigate.
Round of 16
- If Slovakia win Group E - Their last 16 game will be against one of the third-place teams from Group A/B/C/D. This game will be played on July 2.
- If Slovakia are runners up in Group E - Their last 16 game will come against the runner-up of Group D - most likely the Netherlands. This game will be played on July 2.
- If Slovakia finish third in Group E (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Their last 16 game will be against either the winner of Group B - Spain, Italy, Croatia, Albania- or the winner of Group C - England, Denmark, Slovenia, Serbia. These games will be played on June 30 or July 2.
Quarter-Finals
- If Slovakia win Group E - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group D winner vs the runner-up in Group F. On paper, their most likely opponent will be France. This game will be played on July 6.
- If Slovakia are runners up in Group E - They will face the winner of the last-16 clash between the Group F winner vs one of the 3rd-place teams from Group A/B/C/. Their most likely opponent would be Portugal (coming in as Group F winners). This game will be played on July 5.
- If Slovakia finish third in Group E (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - They will either face the winner of the last-16 clash between Group A’s winner and C’s runners-up or the winner of the game between Group A’s runner-up and Group B’s runner-up. These games will be played on July 5 or July 6.
Semi-Finals
- If Slovakia win Group E - Many assumptions have to be made by the time we get to this stage, but if things go as expected, Slovakia will face either England, France, Switzerland or Italy in the semi-final. This game will be played on July 10.
- If Slovakia are runners up in Group E - Again, a lot of assumptions need to be made here but Slovakia’s most likely opponents are Germany, Portugal or Spain. This game will be played on July 9.
- If Slovakia finish third in Group E (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Given how the third-place teams are put into the knockout phase, Slovakia could face any of the teams mentioned above. These games will be played on July 9 or July 10.
Final
- If Slovakia win Group E - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of Germany, Spain, or Portugal - of said clubs, Spain seem the most likely to make it to the final. The final will be played on July 14.
- If Slovakia are runners up in Group E - On the opposing side of the draw in this scenario would be the likes of France, England, Italy or Belgium.
- If Slovakia finish third in Group E (and accumulate enough points to advance to the knockout stage) - Slovakia could be put onto either side of the draw depending on how they rank among the third-place teams, meaning they could face any of the big hitters we have mentioned above.
Slovakia’s Key Players
Milan Skriniar - Slovakia’s best player by some distance is Milan Skriniar. The former Inter Milan centre-back secured himself a move to PSG recently after helping win the Serie A and began 2023/24 in superb form before suffering an ankle injury in January. He should be back fit in time for Euro 204 and Slovakia will need their current captain fit to keep out the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne in the group phase. Skriniar has made 66 appearances for his country and scored a winning goal vs Poland at Euro 2020.
Martin Dúbravka - Newcastle shot-stopper Martin Dubravka has been Slovakia’s no.1 since 2017. He has made over 40 appearances for his country and impressed during Euro 2024 qualifying, keeping five clean sheets along the way. He is also one of only a few players in the Slovakia set-up who has played in one of Europe’s top leagues on a regular basis.
Lukas Haraslin - While Slovakia have some decent options at the back, their lack of quality going forward will be a concern in Germany. This is where they will need Lukas Haraslin to step up. The left-winger was Slovakia’s top scorer in qualifying and currently has 14 goals and six assists in 33 games for Sparta Prague in 2023/24.
