• Age: Nine is considered the ideal age for Grand National winners, with around 25% of all champions falling into that age group. Grand National Course & Fences

Of the 16 fences that make up the Grand National course, five of the jumps have acquired famous names - Becher's Brook, Valentines' Brook, The Chair, Canal Turn, and Foinavon - all of which make up part of Aintree history.

All fences bar the Water Jump are covered with spruce from evergreen coniferous trees, and all, except The Chair and Water Jump, are jumped twice during the race.

Most of the other fences on the Grand National course are relatively straightforward, with the first (and 17th) standing at 4ft 6in high and 2ft 9in wide. The second and fourth fences follow a similar design. However, the third (and 19th) presents a much more formidable challenge with a daunting 6ft ditch before the jump – a feature also found at the 11th (and 27th).

Jockeys will tell you the Canal Turn is where the Grand National is most often won or lost - on landing over this minor obstacle, horses must quickly turn 90 degrees.

With 30 or more horses often still in contention, not every rider can find a clear passage and frequently encounters momentum-stopping interference.
