2023 Melbourne Cup Tips

The Melbourne Cup, also known as “the race that stops the nation,” takes place in the early hours of the morning on Tuesday, for which Willie Mullins’ Vauban is expected to go off a warm favourite to supply the Irish trainer with a first victory in the great race. The question is, does Ryan Moore’s mount represent value in this 24-runner handicap?

Alan Kelly’s Melbourne Cup Tip

Our top tipster, Alan Kelly, casts his expert eye over the Melbourne Cup field and has an 8/1 tip for the big race.

4:00am Flemington - Soulcombe

With 8st 9lb to carry and drawn favourably in stall 3, everything points to a massive run from Irish challenger Vauban, who has been laid out (at a cost of £150k) for this famous race for some time. Since winning the 2022 Triumph Hurdle, according to owner Rich Ricci.

The five-year-old ran away with the Copper House Handicap at Royal Ascot earlier in the year before winning at Group 3 level when taking the Ballyroan Stakes at Naas in August. Vauban appears to have had a perfect preparation leading up to the race worth over £2 million to the winner. At odds of 9/4, however, I would rather look elsewhere for a value each-way alternative with plenty of extra places available.

Last year’s winner, Gold Trip, and the ex-Simon & Ed Crisford-trained Without A Flight (13th last year) have enjoyed trouble-free preparations. But the former will do well to win back-to-back renewals off his revised mark, while the draw has been unkind to the latter, coming from stall 16.

The horse I expect to run a big race is the ex-William Haggas-trained SOULCOMBE, now in the care of 2021-winning trainer Chris Waller. The Frankel gelding began his career down under just over two months after running out an impressive winner of the Melrose Handicap at York’s Ebor meeting last year, winning two of his six starts to date along with running with credit in the other four.

This will be the first time Joao Moreira’s mount has raced over a trip further than 1m 5f since going to Australia, and following promising efforts in trials over 1m 2f and 1m 4f, I expect Soulcombe to come into his own racing over 2m for the first time.
