The Great American Pit Stop: The Most Popular Gas Stations Across the U.S. and the Rise of Convenience Store Culture
It’s no news that gas stations are no longer just a place to refuel your car – they’ve evolved into cultural phenomenons, serving as an entertaining roadside oasis offering almost anything you could possibly need on the road. In the cases of several brands, they’ve become destinations themselves, attracting road trippers and locals alike with niche offerings. Whether it’s the colossal size and quirky merchandise of Buc-ee’s or a slice of perfectly greasy Casey’s cheese pizza, gas stations have found their way into the hearts (and stomachs) of Americans everywhere.
Key Takeaways
- Regional favorites dominate, with more than four chains coming up as favorites in three or more states – and that’s at minimum. Different areas of the country definitely have their favorites!
- Buc-ee’s is the favorite gas station chain in the highest number of states across the U.S. (jerky, anyone?)
- Wawa and their famous hoagies dominate in the greater Philly area
- If you love to travel to the edges of the earth, know that Circle K supports you. They’re reliable and beloved in states like Alaska, California, and Washington.
- Gas station competition is a real thing – and is only getting more so as road trips are re-emerging in popularity as an affordable way to vacation.
The evolution of gas station culture is underway as we know it: gone are the days when they were just a place to buy fuel and a bag of chips or a pre-wrapped pastry. Over time, gas stations have transformed into full-fledged convenience stores, offering everything from freshly brewed (and delicious) coffee and full meals to local merchandise and travel necessities. Especially with the onset of COVID-19, gas stations and convenience stores became relied upon more than ever for a variety of goods and services one might need when on the road.
In an economy where people are stressed and looking to take a vacation from it all but are just as stressed about taking the vacation itself, the rise of the road trip is officially on. Why spend all that money on flights and hotels when you can spend way less on a few tanks of gas and some must-try goodies at a reliable pit stop along the way to an in-state destination?
Buc-ee’s, known for its enormous stores, pristine restrooms, and endless snack options, started in Texas and has since expanded into states like Florida, Georgia, and even Colorado. Buc-ee’s has turned the traditional gas station experience on its head, offering everything from fresh BBQ sandwiches to an entire section dedicated to jerky.
Wawa, on the other hand, dominates the Mid-Atlantic region, especially in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. Wawa has built a cult following around its made-to-order hoagies and freshly brewed coffee. While smaller in scale than Buc-ee’s, Wawa’s focus on food and its loyal customer base make it a beloved roadside stop.
The fact that these two chains combined are favorites in over 20% of the country says a lot about not only their popularity, but about how many other cool gas stations across the U.S. belong to the other 80%. As these roadside stops continue to reinvent themselves and reap the benefits of a hang-low economy where nothing is certain, other tangential companies will also try to reap the benefits of people needing to get the heck out of dodge (maybe in a Dodge).

Final Thoughts: Gas Stations as Destinations
What makes gas stations like Buc-ee’s, Wawa, and Casey’s so beloved? The answer lies in their unique blends of convenience, quality, and value. These chains understand that travelers don’t just want gas – they want an experience. Buc-ee’s turned its stores into full-on retail therapy centers, while Wawa focused on making fresh, made-to-order food. Casey’s built a reputation around a single standout offering (pizza!) that keeps customers coming back. The breakfast pizza is also something to be reckoned with.
What were once simple refueling spots are now key parts of the American travel experience, and people are spending money to have one. When you’re on the open road, there’s something to be said about finding comfort and a sense of community along the way. As you plan your next road trip, be sure to visit the favorite gas station in every state you enter – and support the local community that supports your ability to travel with ease.
Methodology
In October 2024, the research team at Free Bets surveyed 2,500 Americans to tell us about their favorite gas station convenience store chains. Respondents were only asked about gas station convenience store chains with locations in their state, and only chains whose locations are both gas stations and convenience stores were included.
