Atletico Miniero v Botafogo Match Preview
We may have had the glitz and glamour of the Champions League in midweek but now it is time to focus on its rougher and tougher South American cousin – a cousin that is hosting a big party this Saturday evening.
One that comes in the shape of this season’s Copa Libertardores final and with an all-Brazilian lineup in the showpiece event, fans of Atletico Miniero and Botafogo will soon be preparing to overwhelm the streets of Buenos Aires.
While there is no doubt that Atletico Miniero overwhelmed the club that call Saturday’s venue home in the semi-finals and although they and hosts River Plate played out a 0-0 draw at the Estadio Monumental in the second leg, the damage was already done in Belo Horizonte the week before.
A first leg clash at the Arena MRV saw Atletico Miniero run out 3-0 winners thanks to a brace from Deyverson and a goal from Paulinho – but not the one who had a very forgettable spell at Tottenham a decade or so ago.
Nothing forgettable about such a resounding performance against the Argentinian giants and although Gabriel Milito’s men would have raised eyebrows as they took a huge step towards Saturday’s final, they do not finally arrive in Buenos Airies as favourites.
That mantle is handed out to compatriot and opponents Botafogo and after a resounding 5-0 win over Penarol in the first leg of their semi-final tie, a warning signal was handed out for whoever the Rio-based outfit would face in the final.
With the second leg being nothing more than a formality, a 3-1 defeat in Montevideo should not be put forward as evidence when weighing up the ability of Botafogo but a look at their domestic form definitely should.
Form that sees Artur Jorge’s side currently sit top of the Brazilian Serie A standings with two fixture rounds of the season remaining and with a three-point gap between themselves and Palmeiras, they will be favourite to soon scoop domestic honours.
To provide further context, Saturday’s opponents Atletico Miniero are currently 29 points off the pace in 10th and if they are to lift the Copa Libertadores, they will need to forget league positions and go all out in their bid for silverware.
But now it is time for my for two tips and because of Botafogo’s form both home and abroad, I cannot see them slipping up when it matters most. Both teams to score but the favourites to also win in 90 minutes at odds of 3/1 with Betfred.
In addition to this, South American football can be feisty at the best of times and with such high stakes attached to this game, I think the card count will be rather high. Nine cards in total can also be found at the appealing price of 8/1 with Paddy Power.
