Bournemouth v Southampton Match Preview
The final week six clash of this new Premier League season takes us to the seaside and with Bournemouth preparing to play host to local rivals Southampton, both sides will aim to earn far more than just regional bragging rights.
For the Cherries, they will look to extend the current cushion between midtable and those teams who are in early season crisis and before they open their Vitality Stadium doors to the Saints, the Cherries find themselves currently lying 13th in the Premier League table.
Their last outing before Monday was the recent trip to Anfield and although the 3-0 reverse to Liverpool suggests a rather one-sided affair on Merseyside, Bournemouth’s performance certainly offered far more.
Had Antonie Semenyo’s early strike been a fraction more favourable in terms of an offside call, then the complexion of the game would have been far different. As it was, an early let-off for Arne Slot’s men saw them move easily through the gears afterwards.
Bruised after defeat to the team that now top the table but certainly not battered and although Andoni Iraola’s side have picked up five points from their first five outings, you feel that there are more positives than negatives to take from this first portion of the season.
As far as Monday’s opponents are concerned, Southampton make the short journey from Hampshire to Dorset still looking for their first league win of the season and if the clock stopped on 90 minutes the Saturday before last, that would no longer be the case.
Unfortunately for the Saints there is always plenty more added time played these days and with an additional four minutes on the clock during their recent home tie with Ipswich, there were still enough seconds left for Sam Morsy to fire home from the edge of the box.
Delirium for Ipswich after snatching what looked being an unlikely point just moments before but despair for Russell Martin and his players, as they were denied a first win since the club’s return to the Premier League.
With that scenario and an extended recovery period before their next game, it also means the St Mary’s outfit have now dropped down to second bottom and the longer manager Martin goes without a win, the shorter his tenure as Southampton manager may end up being.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with Southampton only scoring twice across their first five games of the league season, I am not expecting them to trouble Bournemouth this evening. Therefore, I am backing the home win to nil at odds of 12/5.
In addition to this, I am also going to look at the correct score market and with the Cherries only scoring five goals themselves – a neat average of one goal per game thus far, I am also backing a 1-0 win for the Cherries at odds of 11/1.
