Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are the two golden boys of men’s tennis at present, as indicated by this being their second straight meeting in a major final.
The pair met in the final at Wimbledon last month, Alcaraz won it, and now they resume hostilities with gold on the line. Will Djokovic gain revenge in Serbian colours?
This is the final (12.30pm) we will be concentrating the majority of this preview on.
But we will also take a brief look at the women’s doubles final between Italians Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini and Russian Olympic Committee pair Mirra Andreeva and Dian Shnaider (2pm).
Carlos Alcaraz vs Novak Djokovic Betting Tips
It’s no surprise that Alcaraz is the strong favourite, at 21/50. I wouldn’t be taking that, instead going on the 11/10 BetMGM are offering on the Spaniard to win this 2-0.
I would also be taking bet365′s 1.41/1 double on an Alcaraz straight win plus Italians Errani and Paolini to win the women’s doubles title.
The latter are a far more experienced doubles pair than the Russians. This summer, they have played together at Wimbledon, lost in the final at the French and won in Rome. Andreeva and Shnaider are regular doubles players, but not together.
Carlos Alcaraz v Novak Djokovic - Olympic Games Tennis betting preview
I do fully expect Alcaraz to win this, as previously advised. But I also think Djokovic is better placed to put up more of a fight than he did in the Wimbledon final when he lost 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
Look at the results of both of these players at this Olympics, and they have won their respective matches pretty comfortably. They have not lost a set between them and have won the majority of their sets pretty comfortably as well.
That may lead to some tight sets here.
With that in mind, William Hill’s 1/1 on Alcaraz to win and over 19.5 games in the match has appeal. A 6-4, 6-4 win would secure that punt.
And the same firm are offering up the last two bets that I will give you for this final.
The first is their 5/2 for Djokovic to serve over two Aces in the match and Alcaraz to serve over four Aces. Djokovic has achieved that feat in all five of his matches so far, while Alcaraz has fulfilled his side of the bargain in four of the five rounds.
And, finally, as a bit of a long shot, why not take on - for small stakes, I may add - Alcaraz to win 2-0 and to win each set either 6-4 or 7-6. That’s available at a boosted 13/2.
As I said earlier, I can see Djokovic sticking with the favourite for this match while still coming out on the wrong side of things. Even though he lost easily at Wimbledon, the match still included a tiebreak. So this type of scoreline is something I wouldn’t be surprised to see happen.
