So, looking ahead to the weekend, here's what Clinton had to say when speaking exclusively to Free Bets.
History for Palace
Q: What a day it was for Crystal Palace on Saturday. As a former player, are you still on a high from the day?
Saturday was brilliant. I think it's one of the best feelings in football to see your team that you've grown up playing for nearly 10 years after coming through the academy, go on and win like that. As a South London boy as well, I was just proud.
It is a proud moment for the players, but in particular the fans. The fans have had to wait many years to win a trophy. It was just a fantastic day, one of those ones where you'll just never forget for the rest of your life.
Q: The best day in the history of the club?
Yeah, I would say that, without a shadow of a doubt.
The club has suffered turmoil. I was there twice and there was administration where you were thinking - who's going to save the club?
I was walking around Wembley and people are saying it's the best day of their life.
I'm thinking - you've had kids! But they still think it's the best day of their life, and that's what football can do to you. It gives you moments like this that are special.
I think to win a trophy, it is definitely the best day in the club's history without a shadow of a doubt
Q: It means Europa League football next season, which should go down very well with supporters! Will you be able to get to any games?
I will definitely be making a few European trips if I'm not working. I'm definitely going as a fan because I think it'll be a great experience.
To see Crystal Palace in the Europa League is fantastic. The fans always travel in their numbers, they were brilliant at Wembley and always are away from home and at Selhurst Park too.
The ground will need some work, and hopefully they recognise that, so hopefully it gets sorted out!
But we don’t know how many times we’re ever going to be in Europe in my lifetime, so it is something that is close to my heart.
The club gave me the chance to be a professional footballer, so I feel like I owe a lot to them. A lot of people will say that people like me and other players have all played a part in this history, and maybe we have, but it was down to that group of players and the manager on the day.
Q: It might not be the time to talk about it, but can Palace kick on next season or have they hit their ceiling, with players like Eze and Guehi potentially moving on this summer?
That’s a good question because I do think they can kick on next season. They have to keep hold of players like Marc Guehi, but honestly, I don’t think they will be able to and it might be the same with Eze.
But when you’re in Europe it gives you that extra lure, and potentially it could help keep a few players because there is Europa League football on offer, and it might attract some players too.
I’ve seen rumours that they might be able to add three or four players to the squad.
But it’s not all about keeping the players, keeping the manager will be just as important because his stock is high now and there will be a lot of bigger clubs looking at him.
He is building something at Palace and long may it continue. Hopefully next season they can kick on and finish higher up the league, and you never know, there is an outside chance they qualify for Europe again.
If you can keep the core of the squad at the club, build around Guehi and Eze and then with players like Wharton, Mateta, Munoz - who I think has been the best right-back in the Premier League this season - then I think Palace have a good chance of kicking on next season.
Europa League Final
Q: Like you say, Glasner will be in demand this summer. One of the clubs he has been linked with already is Tottenham, who had a big night on Wednesday. He’s had a lot of plaudits for delivering in his second season but you’ve said for a while that you don’t expect to see him there come August.
Does that change at all after winning the Europa League?
He’s in a good position, whatever happens.
Do I think Daniel Levy will keep him? I’m not 100% sure. I do think there is a good chance he won’t be there next season but you know what? He has done what he set out to do - he always wins a trophy in the second season, and fair play, he has backed that up.
He’s been honest in saying that all he’s done since January is concentrated on the Europa League and Spurs fans won’t be happy with where they have finished in the league, but at the end of the day they’ve won a trophy.
It’s all about winning trophies in football, that’s what you have to do and he has gone and done it, so fair play to him.
Spurs fans might have a go at him but he will probably go down as a legend at the club because he brought them a trophy and they haven’t won one for something like 17 years.
It wasn’t the best of finals, but who cares? It’s about who turns up and gets their hands on that trophy.
What does it mean for Ange? Maybe it will be like ten Hag last season when he got kept on after winning the FA Cup, but if I was a betting man I’d probably say he won’t be there in the summer.
Q: You’ve already mentioned it - football is about winning trophies. Spurs have still had a bit of criticism for their league finish despite winning the Europa League, but does that matter? Is this a successful season?
It is a hard one, but at the end of the day there are four trophies for them to win; the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Premier League and the Europa League.
So going into the season, they want to win one of them. They were out of all three so put all their eggs in one basket and won a trophy. There are teams like Man City and Arsenal who haven’t won a trophy this season and Tottenham have, and as a professional that’s what you aim to do.
Yes the Premier League season has been terrible and over 20 losses is nowhere near good enough and has to be addressed, but the Europa League trophy is a big trophy and always has been.
It doesn’t matter about the quality, you beat the teams around you and it guarantees Champions League football. So it’s not been the best season, but the fans will bite your hand off for it.
Q: They have bragging rights over Arsenal too…
I’ve just seen a press conference where someone has asked Mikel Arteta if Tottenham have had a better season than Arsenal, and he said “I don’t want to comment on other teams”!
I couldn’t believe they asked it! But I suppose everyone will talk about it because really, Tottenham have probably had a better season because they’ll be playing Champions League football and have won a trophy. Arsenal will be playing Champions League football but don’t have a trophy, it’s crazy isn’t it?
Q: On the other side of the coin, Ruben Amorim has had a really tough time since taking charge at Manchester United. He said after the game that he would happily step aside if he wasn’t wanted at the club and you’d have to say that without winning the trophy last night, it’s been pretty awful since he took charge last night, hasn’t it?
Does he still deserve to get time, is he the right man to take them forward?
I think he will get until Christmas for sure, after bringing in some players this summer.
It’s been nowhere near good enough. The Manchester United hierarchy might put their heads together and admit it hasn’t worked, but you can’t keep sacking managers and bringing new people in. You don’t want to be that type of club, but it is Manchester United Football Club and it’s probably the worst season they’ve ever had in Premier League history.
Winning the trophy might have eased the pressure and helped them attract different players, but they’ll be shopping in different markets now with Champions League football.
I think fans and players are going to have to suffer a bit for a few more seasons.
I would probably keep Amorim, give him the start of the season and see what money they have to spend, but it will be a long summer.
Q: It’s been their worst performance this season, but is it the worst Manchester United side you can remember?
Manchester United set such high standards that you would have to say at the moment, it is probably the worst Manchester United team I have seen.
They still have some top individual players. Bruno Fernandes is a top player, one of the best in the Premier League but there aren’t many others who turn up week in, week out like he does.
But I blame recruitment, and maybe some of the players. The jersey is too big for them and so what is expected at that club.
When I was playing, if a club like Manchester United came knocking, you’d walk up the motorway to join them. You probably still would to be fair, they’re still one of the biggest teams in the world. But fans are so used to winning stuff from the Sir Alex Ferguson days, and will they ever get back to that? Hopefully one day, but I’m not so sure at this point.
Championship Play-Off Final
Q: Moving ahead to the weekend, and we’ve got the play-off finals taking place. The Championship final in particular on Saturday, is that one of the best days of the football calendar?
It's one of the biggest and most expensive days, for sure.
I would probably say it's the best way to get promoted. Finishing first might be better, but not finishing second.
If someone guaranteed me and said you could play at Wembley in front of 90,000 people, score a winning goal and get promoted like that, I'd take it all day, every day.
Footballers go into professional football to win stuff, get promoted and score winning goals.
It's going to be a good game. They are two really good teams, with two good managers.
I'd probably just make Sheffield United favorites because I think they've got the experience in Chris Wilder and the more experienced players, but I wouldn't rule out Sunderland, that's for sure.
Q: Sheffield United have been the better side all season, but does it count for much on days like this?
It was the same last year when Leeds were in the same position, but they just did not turn up and they were out.
That could happen for Sheffield United even though they've got a lot of top players.Sometimes you freeze on the big stage or you just don't turn up, which will be a problem if Sunderland do turn up.
Sunderland have got some good players and they can defend for their lives, as you saw against Coventry. They've got good players. Jobe Bellingham, they've got Mayenda and Isidor. These players can go and cause you problems. Roberts on the right, Le Fee on the left…
They have players that can go and cause problems so it won’t be an easy game for Sheffield United, but they have top qualities and players throughout their team.
It will be a very good final.
Q: With those talented youngsters Sunderland have, is it a case of now or never? A few of those players could well be picked off either way, but if they don’t go up you can see them being picked apart…
They’ve gone down the route of bringing young players in, so they do have good youngsters. But for a club like that with 45,000 at the Stadium of Light, it’s a club you think should be playing in the Premier League.
If they go up they might be able to keep hold of the likes of Bellingham who is being linked with moves away. They’ve already lost Watson to Brighton, so it shows they’re a club who isn’t going to be able to keep hold of their best youngsters.
But if you’re playing Premier League football, it is an attraction for the youngsters and it should help keep them.
I do think there is more pressure on Sheffield United though. They have spent more money and the Sunderland youngsters will be able to play without fear.
Chris Wilder knows about getting teams promoted. He has that experience so I do make Sheffield United favourites. With players like Hamer, O’Hare and Keiffer Moore, there is plenty of experience and quality there.
League One Play-Off Final
Q: It’s then the League One final on Sunday, Charlton v Leyton Orient. How do you see that one going?
Charlton were the team in form at the end of the season…
Leyton Orient are in very good form as well. Richie Wellens has done a great job with that football club, bringing them all the way into the play-offs when you thought they were done and dusted. They had no right to be in there.
Wellens has done a fantastic job, and so has Jones, so that's a hard one to call.
This is a 50-50 game because I tell you what, Leyton Orient went to Stockport and beat them on penalties, and Stockport are a fantastic team.
This is not an easy one for Charlton for sure.
I think it will be a draw in normal time and penalties. There are good players at the top end of the pitch. Kelman is in brilliant form, as is Matty Gordon. It will be a battle of the strikers
I’m going to side with Leyton Orient on penalties.
AFC Wimbledon v Walsall
Q: And then Wimbledon v Walsall on Monday?
It is another hard one to be fair, because Walsall were flying and then dropped off towards the end of the season. But then they blew a good side in Chesterfield to pieces.
Wimbledon though they have been very good this season. I think they're the favourites.
I know all the coaching stuff at Walsall though, so it's a difficult one to predict. But I'd probably just say Wimbledon are going to win it 2-1.
But I would love Walsall to do it because I know a lot of the coaching staff there. They’ve been suffering recently but it should be a good game.
Premier League Top Five
Q: And finally, it’s the final Premier League game of the weekend on Sunday. Who do you see finishing in that top five, with five teams competing for three spots?
It should be a good day.
In order, I think it will finish Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle and Chelsea.
I expect Villa to beat Manchester United and Nottingham Forest could beat Chelsea, but I think Chelsea will do enough.
I could be wrong, and Villa fans might have a go at me because I played for Birmingham! But I think Chelsea will do enough to finish fifth. I expect Villa to get the win they need but Chelsea know how important it is. It’s a game that could go either way, but I think they’ll be okay.
