The Richard Fahey-trained Pretty Crystal pulled off a shock at Newmarket this afternoon, landing the Group 3 Nell Gwyn under jockey Oisin Orr.
Sent off at 18/1, the daughter of Dubawi dug deep to hold off Godolphin’s Dance Sequence, who had been sent off the odds-on favourite.
This was Pretty Crystal’s first victory since winning on debut last June at Ripon, with consistent efforts in Group company since then, including a 5th place run in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot.
She doesn’t hold an entry for the 1000 Guineas, and trainer Richard Fahey says discussions will now take place about supplementing her for the Classic, but she is far from certain to take her chance.
For Dance Sequence, questions remain though, and having been as low as 4/1 for the 1000 Guineas, the Charlie Appleby-trained filly is now 7/1 with bet365.
Appleby was far from disheartened post-race though, commenting that she is still very raw and that the step up in trip in the 1000 Guineas will suit his filly.
