England Euro 2024 Squad Odds: Southgate announces extended 33-man squad

England boss Gareth Southgate has announced a preliminary 33-man squad for this summer’s Euro 2024 tournament, which takes place in Germany.

England’s first game at Euro 2024 is against Serbia on June 16, but first, they will play Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 3 before Iceland on June 7 in warm-up friendlies.

UEFA have mandated a deadline of June 7 for teams to name their final squads, meaning Southgate will have to whittle his squad down to 26 in the coming weeks.

The Three Lions have never won a European Championship. They reached the final in 2021 but are looking to go one better this summer with 3/1 odds making them the current favourite to lift the trophy.

England announce preliminary 33-man Euro 2024 squad

Goalkeepers

  • Jordan Pickford (Everton)
  • Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal)
  • James Trafford (Burnley)
  • Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace)

Gareth Southgate has opted to select four goalkeepers for his provisional Euro 2024 squad, with number one and two options Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale both getting the call-up.

However, as England generally only take three goalkeepers to major tournaments, one of James Trafford or Dean Henderson will likely be cut following the June friendlies. Both keepers have had their ups and downs this season, though Henderson did impressive late in the campaign as Crystal Palace went on a seven-game unbeaten run in the Premier League. Will that be enough to book him a place on the plane?

Defenders

  • Harry Maguire (Manchester United)
  • John Stones (Manchester City)
  • Kyle Walker (Manchester City)
  • Kieran Trippier (Newcastle)
  • Luke Shaw (Manchester United)
  • Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton)
  • Jarell Quansah (Liverpool)
  • Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace)
  • Lewis Dunk (Brighton)
  • Joe Gomez (Liverpool)
  • Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa)

There are a number of regular faces named in England’s preliminary squad for Euro 2024, with Southgate’s preferred back-four of Kyle Walker, John Stones, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw all called up. Elsewhere, there is a first call-up for Liverpool youngster Jarell Quansah after his stellar showings for the Reds, though it remains to be seen if he will actually make the final 26-man squad.

There are also a couple of noticeable absences from England’s backline as Chelsea duo Reece James and Ben Chiwell miss out. The pair have both struggled with injury issues across the season, with this the likely reason they are not going to Germany.

Midfielders

  • Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid)
  • Declan Rice (West Ham)
  • Curtis Jones (Liverpool)
  • Conor Gallagher (Chelsea)
  • Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace)
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)
  • Kobbie Maino (Manchester United)

England’s top two midfielders in Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice have, unsurprisingly, been handed call-ups by Southgate, while Conor Gallagher makes the cut following a stellar 2023/24 with Chelsea.

Elsewhere, there are debut call-ups for Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton. Missing out, meanwhile, is 33-year-old Jordan Henderson, who has previously been relied upon heavily by Southgate but looks to have finally been forced out of the Three Lions fold after a challenging year in which he left Liverpool for Saudi Arabia, before returning to Europe and suffering an injury-hit six months with Ajax.

Forwards

  • Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United)
  • Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace)
  • Phil Foden (Manchester City)
  • Jack Grealish (Manchester City)
  • Anthony Gordon (Newcastle)
  • Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)
  • Cole Palmer (Chelsea)
  • Bukayo Saka (Arsenal)
  • Ivan Toney (Brentford)
  • Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)
  • James Maddison (Tottenham)

Unsurprisingly, England’s forward selection on Tuesday included Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden - all of whom were nailed-on picks following superb club campaigns.

Ivan Toney has also been brought back into the fold despite his limited game time this term but with Ollie Watkins ahead of him in the England pecking order currently, he may miss out on the final squad.

Meanwhile, there is no room in the team for Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling or Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford. The pair have featured at every major tournament under Southgate to date but they are seemingly being phased out in favour of younger talent such as Palmer and Foden.
