Gareth Southgate provides update on Manchester United’s Luke Shaw

Manchester United’s first game back after the March international break sees them face off with Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.

The Red Devils are currently 6th in the Premier League and nine points off 4th-place Aston Villa with a game in hand, while the Bees sit just five points above the relegation zone. Back Man United to beat Brentford at 6/5 with bet365.

Luke Shaw injury update

Before the game, Gareth Southgate has provided an injury update on Luke Shaw, who has had a number of muscle injuries, including a serious hamstring issue.

This has limited the left-back to just 12 Premier League games this season. He also missed the latest international break and is facing a race against time to return to action for United ahead of a crucial run-in.

However, comments from Southgate this week suggest that Shaw will not return to action until the tail end of the 2023/24 campaign, which will limit his ability to feature at Euro 2024:

“He’s going to be right on the edge of the season,” the Three Lions boss said after the 1-0 defeat to Brazil on Saturday. “We know now to play seven matches in a Euros is highly unlikely.”

Ben Chilwell is expected to start in Germany if Shaw remains unfit, though the Chelsea man has struggled for form when wearing an England shirt of late. When quizzed on Chilwell’s outing vs Brazil last week - which he was criticised for - Southgate said:

“I thought Ben defended really well and it was an important game for him,” Southgate stated. “I don’t want to kill Ben. But Luke’s one of the best left-backs in world football, frankly.”
