Germany Euro 2024 Odds: Nagelsmann announces squad
Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann has announced his preliminary 27-man squad for this summer’s Euro 2024 tournament, which takes place on home soil for Die Mannschaft.
UEFA confirmed last month that teams can take 26 players to the tournament this summer, meaning one of the stars currently selected will need to be axed before Germany begin their tournament on June 14.
Germany have not won a European Championship since 1996, with their best finish in the following years a 2016 semi-final place. As England found out in 2021, however, playing in your home country can be a major boost, with the Germans currently priced at 5/1 to win the tournament this year.
Euro 2024 Odds: Current Favourites
- England - 3/1
- France - 7/2
- Germany - 5/1
- Portugal - 8/1
- Spain - 9/1
- Italy - 18/1
- Netherlands - 18/1
Germany announce preliminary 27-man Euro 2024 squad
Goalkeepers
- Oliver Baumann (TSG Hoffenheim)
- Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich)
- Alexander Nübel (VfB Stuttgart)
- Marc-André ter Stegen (Barcelona)
An ageing Manuel Neuer has been handed what could well be his last call-up for a European Championship tournament. The 38-year-old has lost the no.1 spot to FC Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen in recent times, and is expected to be the back-up option in Germany this summer.
Elsewhere, with Nagelsman having selected 27 players in his preliminary squad, one of Alexander Nubel or Oliver Baumaan will likely be dropped for the final squad announcement. The latter has been Germany’s third-choice for years but is yet to earn a cap, while Nubel has earned a call-up on the back of a stellar 2023/24 with Stuttgart, who have secured a place in next season’s Champions League.
Defenders
- Waldemar Anton (VfB Stuttgart)
- Benjamin Henrichs (RB Leipzig)
- Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich)
- Robin Koch (Eintracht Frankfurt)
- Maximilian Mittelstädt (VfB Stuttgart)
- David Raum (RB Leipzig)
- Toni Rüdiger (Real Madrid)
- Nico Schlotterbeck (Borussia Dortmund)
- Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen)
Despite primarily playing as a defensive midfielder for Bayern Munich, Joshua Kimmich has been called up for Germany as a defender. This is perhaps due to the limited quality they have in the full-back areas. Antonio Rudiger and Jonathan Tah have formed an excellent partnership at the centre of Germany’s defence, while Nico Schlotterbeck is a solid back-up option.
Out wide, meanwhile, Kimmich will likely be used as the primary right-back, while the left-back spot will be contested between David Raum and Maximilian Mittelstadt. Like Alexander Nubel, Maximilian Mittelstadt has earned a place in the senior team after impressing for Stuttgart in 2023/24, providing seven goal contributions across 33 games from a full-back position.
Midfiedlers
- Robert Andrich (Bayer Leverkusen)
- Chris Führich (VfB Stuttgart)
- Pascal Groß (Brighton)
- İlkay Gündoğan (Barcelona)
- Toni Kroos (Real Madrid)
- Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich)
- Aleksandar Pavlović (Bayern Munich)
- Leroy Sané (Bayern Munich)
- Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen)
Midfield is an area Germany are not short of quality in. Toni Kross and Ilkay Gundogan will provide experienced heads in the centre of the park, complementing emerging talent like Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz.
Largely operating as an attacking midfield, Florian Wirtz has provided 18 goals and 19 assists in all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen as they look to complete an unbeaten treble. For Germany, Wirtz is often used on the left flank, but his showings for Leverkusen this term suggest it may be time for Nagelsmann to move him into his more favoured central position.
Forwards
- Maximilian Beier (Hoffenheim)
- Niclas Füllkrug (Borussia Dortmund)
- Kai Havertz (Arsenal)
- Thomas Müller (Bayern Munich)
- Deniz Undav (VfB Stuttgart)
As has been the case for many years now, Germany have struggled to find a striker who can score goals on a consistent basis at international level. Deniz Undav has enjoyed the most prolific club season of the five forwards selected, netting 19 in 32 for Stuttgartt, while 31-year-old Niclas Fullkrug has 16 goals and 10 assists for Borussia Dortmund.
It is Arsenal’s Kai Havertz who has arguably been the most impressive of the quintuple in recent months, though, scoring eight and notching six assists in his last 13 Premier League games.
