Grimsby deserved at least a point for their efforts at Fleetwood on the opening day, having created a plethora of chances on the Fylde Coast before falling narrowly to a 1-0 defeat to Charlie Adam’s side.
The Mariners got their just desserts in midweek, though, with a positive showing against Bradford rewarded with a win on penalties, and a 2nd Round EFL Cup tie with Sheffield Wednesday.
The biggest positive to come out of Tuesday for Town was the performance of George McEachran, in the number six role – getting that part of the team right will be crucial to efficiently executing the way David Artell wants his team to play.
The positive signs are there, though, and Grimsby should get their first points of the campaign against a Cheltenham side who had been somewhat fortuitous in victory against Newport on day one, snatching a 3-2 victory late on when the draw the game was heading towards might have been fair.
If Grimsby can force the Robins to go long from goal-kicks, the absence of Harry Pell for the visitors will mean it will have to be Ryan Bowman winning headers, and the 6′2″ striker is not the target man he’s often billed as, so the visitors would then have a chance to gain control.
Plus, in wide forward Jason Daði Svanþórsson, the hosts have quality in the final third.
