A key clash for potentially deciding who will win the 2024 Ballon d’Or took place on Tuesday, May 7.
Borussia Dortmund and PSG faced off at the Parc des Princes in the second of two Champions League semi-final ties.
Dortumd headed into the game in the French capital boasting a 1-0 lead from the first leg last week and were able to repeat that scoreline on Tuesday thanks to a 50th-minute effort from Mats Hummels. BVB are now set to face Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the competition’s showpiece on June 1, while PSG’s search for a Champions League trophy goes on.
2024 Ballon d’Or odds
Ahead of Tuesday’s game in Paris, PSG forward Kylian Mbappe was joint-favourite alongside Jude Bellingham to go on and win the Ballon d’Or later this year.
Despite the award being an individual prize, club performance across the season does play a major role - see Luka Modric’s win in 2018. As a result, whoever wins the Champions League usually has at least one player with a real chance of securing the Ballon d’Or. Bellingham heads into Real Madrid’s second-leg semi-final with Bayern Munich on May 8 as the new favourite to win the Ballon d’Or.
Real Madrid won La Liga over the weekend after they beat Cadiz 3-0 and title rivals, FC Barcelona, were bested by Girona.
Bellingham can now clinch the Spanish league title and the Champions League in his first season at the club, with Los Blancos the favourites to see off Bayern Munich and then Borussia Dortmund in the final next month.
The Englishman has scored 22 and assisted 10 in 38 games across all competitions this term and if Real Madrid complete the double, he stands a real chance of picking up the Ballon d’Or.
Kylian Mbappe & Harry Kane to challenge Bellingham
Bellingham’s closest challengers for the Ballon d’Or at present are Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe has scored a staggering 43 goals and provided 10 assists in 46 games for his club so far this campaign. However, his showings in the latter stages of the Champions League have hindered the Frenchman in the betting. But with France among the favourites to win the Euros this summer, Mbappe can still stake a claim for the award with a big showing in Germany.
Like Mbappe, Harry Kane is in the midst of a sensational goalscoring campaign. The Englishman has found the net 44 times and assisted 11 in 44 games so far in 2023/24. However, with Bayern Munich losing out on the Bundesliga to Bayer Leverkusen, Kane will likely only win the Ballon d’Or this year if Bayern secure the Champions League and England excel at Euro 2024 with the striker captaining the Three Lions.
