Manchester City’s hopes of becoming the first side in English history to complete back-to-back trebles was ended on Wednesday evening when they were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid.
Despite the defeat to Los Blancos, the Sky Blues still have plenty to play for this term and are currently 1.26/1 to complete a Premier League and FA Cup double in 2023/24.
Pep Guardiola on Champions League exit
Manchester City secured a 3-3 draw in the first leg of the quarter-final clash in Madrid and were favourites to qualify ahead of kick-off at the Etihad on Wednesday.
Rodrygo gave Real Madrid a 1-0 lead after 12 minutes in Manchester but City largely controlled the clash from there. Kevin De Bruyne eventually levelled things up in the 74th minute but Pep Guardiola’s side were unable to add a second goal in the remaining 90 minutes or extra time despite being the better team.
On his side’s Champions League exit, Pep said: “I have to say thank you to these players from deep in my heart because of the way they played. But football is about winning and we didn’t do enough yet we were exceptional.
“Sometimes you can win on penalties and sometimes you cannot. But in the game we did not convert the chances that we had, even though we defended really. Everyone performed at a high level. We said we would have to be at our best to play Real Madrid and they were.”
Manchester City’s first game post-Real Madrid comes on Saturday and is against Chelsea in the semi-final of the FA Cup, with the Citizens set to kick off at Wembley as 3/5 favourites.
