League One Season Preview 2024/25
We head into the new season with some big names in League One.
Birmingham and Huddersfield both relegated, Bolton didn’t go up, and when you throw Wrexham into the mix, we’ve got some big fanbases, and the interest in the league this season could be as high as it’s ever been.
It could also be one of the most competitive seasons we’ve had, up to 10 teams will fancy their chances of promotion, and at the bottom end of the table, the relegation battle looks wide open too.
Before giving our League One season predictions, here is a look at the latest betting odds for the big battles at the top and bottom of the table.
League One Winner Odds
Team | Latest Winner Odds |
---|---|
Birmingham | 2/1 |
Bolton | 10/1 |
Rotherham | 11/1 |
Wrexham | 12/1 |
Huddersfield | 12/1 |
Charlton | 14/1 |
Rest | 18/1+ |
We kick off with the league winner odds, and after Birmingham, who are the 2/1 favourites, it’s wide open.
Elsewhere, Bolton, beaten playoff finalists at Wembley last season, are second favourites at 10/1.
A trio of teams come next who were not playing League One football last year, Rotherham (11/1) and Huddersfield (12/1) came down from the Championship, while Wrexham (12/1) are up from League Two.
Charlton round off the top six in the betting, a side who appear to be trying to kick on under Nathan Jones, and have spent well over the summer.

League One Promotion Odds
Team | Latest Promotion Odds |
---|---|
Birmingham | 13/20 |
Rotherham | 11/4 |
Bolton | 3/1 |
Wrexham | 7/2 |
Huddersfield | 7/2 |
Peterborough | 9/2 |
Charlton | 5/1 |
Barnsley | 11/2 |
Reading | 6/1 |
Wycombe | 6/1 |
Stockport | 6/1 |
Blackpool | 6/1 |
Wigan | 13/2 |
Lincoln | 7/1 |
Rest | 10/1+ |
We’ve already spoken a little about the main contenders, but there’s plenty of other teams who will fancy their chances of promotion, either automatically or via the playoffs.
Clubs such as Barnsley and Peterborough have been around the promotion chase for the past two seasons, while Reading, Blackpool, Wycombe and Wigan are all teams that could drastically improve what they did last season in this league.
Lincoln are fascinating, after finishing so strongly last season, but they’ve lost some key players over the summer, while Stockport are a good side up from League Two, and with the presence of Wrexham coming up alongside them, could fly under the radar a little.
The race for promotion looks wide open, and away from Bolton, the odds suggest that.

League One Relegation Odds
Team | Latest Relegation Odds |
---|---|
Crawley | 8/11 |
Shrewsbury | 5/4 |
Cambridge | 27/20 |
Northampton | 13/8 |
Exeter | 11/5 |
Stevenage | 5/2 |
Burton Albion | 5/2 |
Mansfield | 11/4 |
Leyton Orient | 3/1 |
Bristol Rovers | 4/1 |
Rest | 9/2+ |
Lastly, let’s take a look at the relegation odds, and here we have an odds on favourite in Crawley who are 8/11, they are newly promoted after winning the League Two playoffs at Wembley last season.
Shrewsbury, Cambridge and Northampton all struggled in this league last season, but ultimately had enough to keep safe.
Exeter and Stevenage could find themselves slipping down the standings this season, while looking at bigger odds, Mansfield and Bristol Rovers could get dragged down into the danger zone.
The favourites in this market do appear to be the ones who look set for trouble this season.

Huddersfield to Bounce Back at First Attempt
Looking at the top of the league first. You’re taking a big leap with Birmingham in terms of chemistry, there’s no doubting they’ve been recruiting Championship quality players, but will they come together, and will they have the ability to go to tricky places in this league, and take three points home with them?
At 2/1 to win the league, and 13/20 for promotion, that’s no price for me to find out.
I’d rather go with less of a gamble, and a team a much better odds, and that’s Huddersfield.
They’ve kept a lot of last season’s team, who were relegated, but have a new manager on board, Michael Duff, who is exceptional at this level, and they’ve recruited well.
Still lacking a big goalscoring threat, but I think that will be resolved before the end of the transfer window, possibly before the start of the season.
I think in Lasse Sorensen and Herbie Kane they’ve brought in two wonderfully creative players, who on their day are a cut above League One, and that will really help push this team forward.
Get a striker in to finish the jigsaw puzzle, and I think Huddersfield are a great bet for both promotion and to win the league outright.
Shrewsbury and Bristol Rovers Fancied for the Drop
Crawley have a tough task ahead of them this season, there’s no doubting that, but I prefer to find value in those that have struggled in League One before.
Kicking off with Shrewsbury Town, a team who have managed to avoid relegation before, but now I think their time is up.
They were the worst team I saw all last season, created very little, and they’ve done nothing to improve that for me this summer.
They’ve got a small squad, don’t appear to have regular goals in them, and if last season is anything to go by, they will ship goals this year too.
This looks to be the year they finally go down.
Looking further down the list for a bit of value, and I’ve landed on Bristol Rovers.
10th favourites for relegation, so technically, they shouldn’t be too far off mid table if the odds are right, but I could see them being a lot closer to the bottom than that, and they appeal as a bigger priced, value pick for the drop.
Matt Taylor took charge mid way through last season, and went with the players he had. But this summer, he’s seen plenty of changes, and it’s a pretty much new look side.
But there’s plenty of gambles within that, and if they start badly, which is entirely possible due to so much turnover, then I wonder if the quality is in there to pull away.
A comfortable mid table position would be no surprise, if some of their gambles go well, but at the same time, a slow start, followed by further struggles would also not surprise and at 4/1, I’ll take a chance on them to struggle and go down.
