Leicester City faced off with West Brom in a Championship clash at the King Power Stadium on Saturday afternoon and came away with a 2-1 win.
The victory means the Foxes’ promotion odds have been slashed to 1/25 with three games of the 2023/24 season to play.
Leicester 2-1 West Brom
West Brom were expected to prove a stern test for Leicester City, with the Baggies heading into the game looking to secure a play-off place.
However, Saturday’s win proved a fairly routine one for a star-studded Foxes. Wilfred Ndidi fired the hosts into the lead after 22 minutes before veteran striker Jamie Vardy made it 2-0 with 65 minutes on the clock. Jed Wallace pulled one back for West Brom with 14 minutes to play, but it proved to be little more than a consolation goal.
Who will win the Championship?
After the weekend’s action, there are four teams still in with a chance of clinching top spot in England’s second division.
Leicester currently occupy top spot, but only seven points separate them and 4th-place Southampton with each team having three games still to play.
The Contenders
1st- Leicester City (91 points)
After being relegated from the Premier League last term, Leicester were the favourites to secure promotion back to the top flight due to their star-studded squad. Unsurprisingly, Leicester have the second-best attack and best defence in the division after 43 games.
The Foxes’ final three games of 2023/24 come against 4th-place Southampton, 10th-place Preston and 19th-place Blackburn.
2nd- Ipswich Town (89 points)
Ipswich Town are on the cusp of completing a major upset, just one season on from securing promotion to the Championship. They sit on 89 points after 43 games, two points clear of 3rd place as they vie for automatic promotion.
However, Ipswich have failed to win their last three league outings - form which will need to change quickly with major games against 7th-place Hull, 8th-place Coventry and 23rd-place Huddersfield on the horizon.
3rd- Leeds United (87 points)
Leeds, along with Leicester City, were expected to dominate the Championship this term and secure a quick return to the Premier League.
However, one win in five has seen the Yorkshire outfit move out of the automatic promotion places and four points off top spot. Leeds’ final three games of 2023/24 come versus Middlesbrough, QPR and fellow promotion hopefuls, Southampton.
4th- Southampton (84 points)
On paper, Southampton’s chances of ending 2023/24 as league leaders are very slim. The Saints have 84 points after 43 games and while they can still technically catch Leicester, the Foxes would have to not win any of their final three matches this term.
Southampton can guarantee Leicester lose at least one of those games, however, as they face the Foxes, Stoke and Leeds in their remaining games.
