Barnsley’s 2-1 loss to Mansfield on opening night underlined their desperate need for strikers: yes, we mean it in the plural.
The Reds were outplayed in the opening 20 minutes and found themselves two behind, but while their visitors had a clinical edge during their best spell, they could only find the net once in 70 minutes of dominance.
Darrell Clarke’s side have a strong midfield trio, of Luca Connell, Matthew Craig and Adam Phillips, but they don’t have anywhere near enough cutting edge up top and that will cost them until it’s addressed.
Hosts Lincoln have goals in them, even from the back in Paudie O’Connor, who bagged a brace in the 3-2 opening day victory at Burton, while Ben House is one of the best all-round centre-forwards in the league.
Plus, while Clarke is a manager has enjoyed success in the lower leagues, and some competitive results at this level, through creating a driven environment and sharp in-game manager.
As a coach, however, Imps boss Michael Skubala is on a different level.
