Infighting at boardroom level, a lack of fight on the field of play. Add a five-point deficit to both Celtic and Aberdeen at the start of the new Scottish Premiership season and all is not well from a Rangers perspective.
Manager Philippe Clement was handed a new contract in the summer but at present his stock is arguably lower than when he first came to Ibrox and even though the Belgian was backed in the summer in terms of transfers, it has once again been a period of poor recruitment.
Felt not only because Rangers have already fluffed their lines domestically and on the continent already this season, but also because Celtic have been the reflection of perfection in the same footballing environment.
The Champions League anthem blared out at Celtic Park as the Hoops breezed past Slovan Bratislava while Rangers supporters sat at home doing their best to avoid the score and counting down the days until their own Europa League exploits got underway.
Exploits that are not in Europe’s premier club competition after Gers lost to Dynamo Kyiv in the third qualifying round of this season’s Champions League qualification process. Not only a bitter defeat but a bitter blow to the club’s already emptying coffers.
Now though, it is a trip to Sweden that is on the agenda and a visit to Malmo in particular. Philippe Clement and his players arrive in this Scandinavian outpost having got the better of Dundee in the Scottish League Cup at the weekend and they will be keen to build on that performance.
As in the newly reformatted Champions League, the Europa League takes on a larger league phase this season and this means Rangers will play a guaranteed eight games at this stage of the competition.
The first of those hurdles is a Malmo side that made it one stage further in this season’s Champions League qualification process but fell at the final hurdle after being dumped out by Sparta Prague.
As for their domestic form, former Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson has got his Malmo side in the position of Swedish champions elect and with a considerable gap at the top of the table, it would take a considerable late collapse not to win the 2024 edition of the Allsvenskan.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with not a lot of difference in the pre-match odds between Malmo and Rangers, the temptation here is to split what difference there is and back the draw. You can get the Swedish stalemate at odds of 23/10 before the game gets underway.
