Manchester United v Tottenham Match Preview
Considering Manchester United and Tottenham are paid up members of the club known as the big six, neither outfit is getting value for money out of their membership fees since the start of this new Premier League season.
The two meet at Old Trafford on Sunday and although Tottenham are a top-half team before a ball is kicked across the weekend, there is every chance that Ange Postecoglou’s men will be joining Sunday’s hosts in the bottom half of the table before kickoff at the Theatre of Dreams.
Spurs 10th before week six gets underway, United one place worse off and even though there is only league place between the two sides at the time of writing, it does feel as if their respective overall trajectories are beginning to differ slightly.
For Spurs, they arrive in Manchester having recorded three successive wins in all competitions and after a week where they made League Cup progress at Coventry and then came from behind to beat Brentford at home in the Premier League, their Europa League campaign began with a win.
Not a perfect performance due to Radu Dragusin’s early sending off but even with a man light for nearly 85 minutes of the game, the North London outfit still managed to keep a clean sheet in a 3-0 home win against Qarabag.
As for United, they open their Old Trafford doors having failed to get the better of Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last weekend in the Premier League and then following that bore draw up with another stalemate in the Europa League on Wednesday.
A rather awkward showing against one of Erik ten Hag’s former clubs as a player and although Christian Eriksen put the Red Devils ahead before the break, Sam Lammers would restore parity for FC Twente after it.
Just the single point from the opening Europa League matchday of the newly expanded format and just like their midtable status domestically, it is the same status that has currently been attributed to them on the continent.
Not that just a single point so early in the competition matters all that much and with just 10 predicted as the required number for automatic progress, it is three more points in the Premier League on Sunday that matters the most.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with both sides having European exploits in midweek, this might just dial down the intensity and therefore, I am going to back United and Spurs to cancel each other out. Therefore, it is the draw at 11/4 that gets us underway.
In addition to this, Brennan Johnson has scored in each of Spurs’ three wins in all competitions and therefore, I am backing the former Nottingham Forest forward to open the scoring on Sunday at odds of 9/1.
