Just over a year after he took office, Humza Yousaf has resigned as Scotland’s First Minister after failing to secure enough cross-party support to survive a major crisis after ending a power-sharing deal with the Scottish Greens.
Who will be the next leader of the SNP and First Minister?
For many, John Swinney is the obvious choice, and the bookmakers have quickly installed him as the odds-on favourite to return to front-line politics.
Kate Forbes is also a popular choice, having lost to Yousaf in last year’s SNP leadership contest, while Health Secretary Neil Gray is another potential candidate for the top job in Scottish politics.
An interesting outsider could be Stephen Flynn, the SNP’s Westminster leader, who could not be First Minister but could technically become party leader.
