Madars Razma to beat Christian Kist
Latvia’s Madars Razma has looked better, and better, and better each time he has appeared at the Ally Pally.
It’s his sixth World Championship on the spin now and up at number 44 in the world will fancy a repeat of last year at a minimum where he reached the third round.
Semi-final runs on the Players Championship and European Tours have underlined his threat and Christian Kist simply hasn’t played enough competitive TV darts to feel like a big threat in this one.
The 38-year-old Dutchman won the BDO world title in 2012 but has slowly fallen down the rankings since, now outside the top 100.
Razma is a good price for an outright win.
Ricky Evans to Win the Match and Throw 7+ 180s
“Rapid” Ricky is a crowd favourite in north London but never really looks like fulfilling his potential on the oche.
On his day, he can rattle home the 180s for fun, but often comes unstuck against the best operators.
Against Gordon Mathers – who is yet to win a World Championship match in three previous attempts – Evans should be able to underline his loftier ranking and produce some of his best-flowing darts, and ever the entertainer this should include maximums.
Nathan Aspinall 3-1 Leonard Gates
American “Soulger” Leonard Gates was the undoubted star of Monday night at the Palace, knocking out an emotional Cameron Menzies thanks to one of his best performances on TV.
Two-time semi-finalist Nathan Aspinall is a big jump up from Menzies, but after a season blighted by injury and episodes of dartitus, Gates will sniff the opportunity to get some legs on the board.
In what might start a pretty cagey affair, we expect Gates’ missed doubles to prove the difference maker here, as Aspinall runs for the line.
