Pontefract Tips: Three Selections for Tuesday July 9
- Tip 1: Pontefract 3:10pm - Elim EW 10/1 with bet365
- Tip 2: Pontefract 3:40pm - Room Service EW 3/1 with bet365
- Tip 3: Pontefract 5:17pm - Cavalier Approach 5/2 with William Hill
The feature race meeting of the day comes at Pontefract, where we have a Listed contest for fillies and mares, plus a Class 2 sprint handicap headlining a good card.
Royal Ascot winner Doha goes in the feature, looking to step up from handicap company and score a Listed success.
There’s seven races in total, with the first going off at 2:10pm. Check for ground updates before placing any bets, as it’s currently raining heavily in the local area.
Pontefract Tips from Alan Kelly
Resident Freebets tipster Alan Kelly has put together three selections for the meeting at Pontefract today, with some big prices around, including in the featured contest, where he goes against the favourite Doha.
3:10pm Pontefract - Elim (Each-Way)
Ralph Beckett’s Doha did us a favour when winning Royal Ascot’s Kensington Palace Stakes last month, and on that performance, deserves to head the betting for this Listed contest.
Some six lengths ahead of Ed Bethell’s ELIM (Each-Way), the well-bred daughter of Sea The Stars will be strongly fancied to confirm that form on 2lb better terms with Callum Rodriguez’ mount.
I am not convinced that Doha will be as well suited to this course as she was by Ascot’s straight mile however, and at a double-figure price is worth taking on with Ed Bethell’s Make Believe filly, who did well from her draw at the royal meeting and can reward connections with some black type after being withdrawn from a handicap at Ayr on Sunday to run here.
This is far from a two-horse race, however, with Astral Beau, Choisya, and Villanova Queen all holding strong claims.
3:40pm Pontefract - Room Service (Each-Way) (Nap)
Back in handicap company for the first time since finishing third in an ultra-competitive nursery at York’s Ebor meeting last year, I have not given up hope that the Kevin Ryan-trained ROOM SERVICE (Each-Way) (Nap) can make his mark in Listed or Group company over sprint trips this season.
The impressive winner of a valuable Sales race at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting on his final start as a juvenile, the Kodi Bear colt probably failed to stay Newbury’s 7f on good to soft ground when seventh in the Group 3 Greenham Stakes on his reappearance.
Returning to the Berkshire racecourse for the Listed 6f Carnarvon Stakes on his most recent start, the mount of Tom Eaves was outclassed behind Karl Burke’s Elite Status but wasn’t far behind horses of the calibre of Relief Rally and Adaay In Devon, both winners at Group or Listed level.
This is a significant drop in class for Room Service, who should prove too good for his seven rivals off a mark of 100 and with conditions to suit. Richard Fahey’s Flaccianello and top-weight Coachello can follow the selection home.
5:17pm Pontefract - Cavalier Approach (Next Best)
Whatever the fate of our each-way selection Elim in the feature race at 3:10pm, trainer Ed Bethell should end the card with a success courtesy of top weight CAVALIER APPROACH, a course and distance winner of just 8 days ago.
Jockey Rossa Ryan took over in the saddle for the first time last week when making most of the running for a comfortable victory over previous winner Glory Hyde and fellow rivals Protest Rally and Let’s Go Hugo.
A 5lb penalty is unlikely to stop the combination from following up again on today’s revised terms and from the same stall (2) as when the Profitable gelding justified favouritism last week. Paul Midgley’s Emperor Caradoc, runner-up on his last three starts, looks best of the rest.
