- Joe Root to be player of the match - 6/1 with Betway
Amidst the Jimmy Anderson farewell, that England performed very well in that first Test kind of got forgotten. They weren’t perfect, but they were more than good enough to brush aside a poor West Indies team who have a lot of improving to do.
England were pretty much perfect with the ball, but not quite so with the bat. From 123-1 in the first-innings reply to 121, they should have got more than 371.
That’s where they’ll look to get better in Nottingham.
Still, we’re nit-picking. Debutant Gus Atkinson was outstanding with 12 wickets in the match.
I expect England to win this second Test, but at 2/13 there’s no value there.
Maybe a couple of quid on William Hill’s long-shot #YourOdds treble is worthwhile. That’s 19/2 on an England win and for both Joe Root and Kraigg Brathwaite to score first-innings fifties.
Root achieved that feat at Lord’s with 68. While visiting captain and opener Brathwaite didn’t, he does have a pretty good record in Test cricket against England - five fifties and three hundreds in 16 Tests.

Let’s get started with bowling success
First of all, bet365 have a price of 11/10 on West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales to take over 2.5 wickets in the match.
He has done that in nine of his 11 Test appearances so far, including with four at Lord’s. He also started the season well at Sussex in the County Championship.
Betway are also offering 5/4 on any bowler to take a five-wicket haul in the first innings at Trent Bridge, where it can often be seamer friendly.
Gus Atkinson claimed seven in the first innings at Lord’s, while Seales - as aforementioned - went close with his four. I think that price represents decent value. Historically, a bowler has achieved that feat in the last seven Tests at Trent Bridge, dating back to 2013.
Roooooooot!!!!
Joe Root has scored four hundreds in seven Tests at Nottingham, so he clearly likes this venue, which is just down the road from his birth city of Sheffield.
William Hill have him at 29/10 to be the top run-scorer in this match. That looks enticing for this England v West Indies bettings tips preview.
As an aside, he has 31 centuries to his name at present for England in Tests. He needs three more to surpass Sir Alastair Cook at the top of our all-time centuries list.
And to finish, how about Root to be the player of the match? That’s available at 6/1 with betway. Achieve that first bet I’ve given you and he has a chance with the second.
