Sunderland v Burnley Match Preview
Sunderland against Burnley represents a top-of-the-table clash at this embryonic stage of the Championship season, with both teams beginning with back-to-back wins in emphatic fashion.
The Black Cats opened with a solid 2-0 victory at Cardiff, before blowing away Sheffield Wednesday – who had themselves flourished on opening day – with a stunning 4-0 victory.
Conversely, Burnley have been incisive and clinical thus far, enjoying a 4-1 victory at Luton before thumping Cardiff 5-0.
Yet, whereas Régis Le Bris’ side have scored six goals from an xGF of 3.74, in other words overperforming their xG but not enormously, Scott Parker’s troops have hit nine from an 2.47 xGF, essentially being extremely ruthless from a low volume of chances.
There may be greater sustainability with Sunderland, and their midfield trio of Dan Neil, Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham, who were outstanding against Wednesday last time out, and the control they provide to offer wide men Patrick Roberts and Jack Roberts a platform.
Conversely, Burnley create chances through longer passes, often in wide areas, because their in-possession midfield setup is effectively a diamond, but with Vitinho and Luca Koleosho acting as conventional wingers, because Josh Brownhill pushes right up into the number 10 position leaving Josh Cullen on his own.
The Clarets will be hoping that by overloading wide and attacking areas, at the expense of midfield, they can play around the Sunderland press and get in behind that way.
There’s a danger, however, that the teams they’ve faced have been disorganised, which has allowed them to get away with not having as much of a midfield, whereas the Mackems are well-drilled and may represent more cohesive opponents.
