The Hundred Preview

The afternoon women’s clash between Trent Rockets and Oval Invincibles (3pm) promises to be an absolute cracker. It could be a winner takes all clash for a place in the top three and qualification for this weekend’s finals.

Oval are currently on nine points and second, while Rockets are on eight points and fourth.

These are two good sides, but I think the Rockets have the edge given the momentum they have created with three straight wins. Any team with Nat Sciver-Brunt and Ash Gardner in it are to be respected, and both are in excellent form.

Oval have won two of their last three, but I would be taking the Rockets at 11/10 with William Hill. That, to me, represents significant value.

The Brave men also need a win to confirm their progression. They face the out-of-contention Welsh Fire (3pm) and are 8/13 to win. I would be leaving that alone as a single, instead including it in a win double with the Rockets women at 5/2 with William Hill.

Just quickly, it’s worth recapping the format of these two competitions. The top team after the group stage advances directly through to the final on Sunday, while second and third play off in an effective semi-final on Saturday.

Currently, Oval Invincibles are top of the men’s event and Welsh Fire the women’s.

Trent Rockets v Oval Invincibles men, 6.30pm

By the time this fixture starts, the Invincibles could be guaranteed a place in the final should Southern Brave not beat Welsh Fire by a big margin in the afternoon. Such is the strength of the Invincibles’ net run-rate, they’re pretty much already there anyway.

The Rockets, meanwhile, are out.

William Hill are offering 14/5 via their #YourOdds on Invincibles’ spinner Adam Zampa to take more than one wicket and for their opening batter Dawid Malan to score over 18 runs.

Australian leggie Zampa is the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 17. Opener Malan, meanwhile, has achieved his side of the bargain in two of his last four innings and will be keen to impress against his former side.

Trent Rockets v Oval Invincibles women, 3pm

Australian all-rounder Ash Gardner, who bowls off-spin, is in excellent form with the ball at present having taken six wickets in her last three matches.

She has improved after a slow start with the ball and has eight wickets in all - the joint-highest in the Rockets squad alongside compatriot Heather Graham.

Importantly, Gardner is utilised at the death and is excellent in that phase of the game.

She is worth serious consideration at 7/2 with betfair to be the Rockets top bowler in the match.

Southern Brave v Welsh Fire men, 3pm

I expect Southern Brave to win this one and secure their place in the knockouts. But whether they do it with a big enough margin to keep alive their hopes of direct qualification through to the final is doubtful.

England seamer Chris Jordan has been excellent so far in this competition with 14 wickets - the third-best haul in the competition at time of writing.

In his last five matches, he has taken two or more wickets on four occasions, including three wickets twice in that time.

Via their pre-built bets section, betway are offering 5/1 on Brave to win and Jordan to be their top wicket-taker in the match.
