Why Tottenham’s Cristian Romero could miss start of next season

Tottenham are back in Premier League action on Saturday as they welcome Luton Town to north London.

Spurs were thumped 3-0 by Fulham in their last outing before the break and need to bounce back this weekend to keep their top-four hunt going. Back Tottenham to beat Luton at 1/5 with bet365.

Cristian Romero to miss start of 2024/25 season?

Ahead of the weekend’s action, Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has expressed a desire to play for Argentina at the Olympics this summer:

“I never had the chance to be in the Olympic Games and I would love to,” said Romero. “Obviously, it doesn’t depend on me, but if you want to take me I am available for the Argentine national team.

“I continue with the same enthusiasm and desire as always to continue doing things well at the club to continue having the possibility of being here.”

The men’s football at the Paris Games runs from July 24 to August 10 and finishes a week before the new Premier League season starts.

Prior to that, Romero will be representing Argentina at the Copa America this summer, which runs between June 20 and July 14.

As a result, Romero could miss the start of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign because he would no doubt need a rest after playing in two tournaments during one summer break, especially with the final competition not finishing until a week before the new season.
