The Wembley Experience

Manchester United nor Tottenham are yet to win the Women’s FA Cup, that status will change for one of these teams on Sunday.

First Time Winners

Another edition of the Manchester derby will take place in this season’s Men’s FA Cup final, and the red half of the city are also represented in the final of their female counterparts. United going to Wembley this Sunday and this time they take on Tottenham in a bid to lift English silverware.

A bid that failed to be completed by United last season and although they made this same showpiece event for 2022/23, they would be the latest team to be downed by Chelsea and the attacking talents of Sam Kerr.

Now it is down to manager Marc Skinner and his players to go one better than their shortfall of 12 months ago and if that is to be case, they will have to get the better of fellow Women’s Super League outfit Tottenham.

An outfit that come into this showpiece event as the underdogs, but in fairness to the North Londoners, it is a status that they largely revel in within the confines of the Women’s footballing landscape.

Especially as that status was solidified during their quarter-final clash with Manchester City and with Mary Fowler putting the blue half of Manchester ahead with just six minutes of the game on the clock, it looked as if that was to be the only goal.

However, Bethany England had other ideas and just how six minutes was important for the first goal of the game, it was just as important for the second. This was the number of additional minutes in the second half and England would use every last one to get Spurs level.

30 minutes of additional time could not break the deadlock, but the lottery of penalties eventually could and with City losing 4-3 on spot kicks, their opponents would finally reach the final four and a meeting with Leicester.

A slightly easier passage for Robert Vilahamn’s team that afternoon, as they brushed past the female Foxes with a 2-1 win after extra time. The road to Wembley subsequently completed and the same afternoon saw their now fellow finalists exact revenge elsewhere.

Despair in last season’s final, but delight in this season’s semi and with Manchester United facing Chelsea once more, this time they would vanquish the ghost of Wembley 2023 and get the better of Emma Hayes’ side by two goals to one.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and because I am big romantic, I am going to back Tottenham to win in 90 minutes. Not only because of the price but because the outsiders are unbeaten in their last five in the league and the underdog win is priced at odds of 5/1.

In addition to this, I am going to back Bethany England to play a huge part in Tottenham’s first ever FA Cup success and the best way to do that is by getting the first goal of the afternoon. If England does so at the home of English football, then the reward is a tempting price of 9/1.
