After taking to the field on Saturday with a point to prove, Nottingham Forest had to make do with a share of the points at home to Crystal Palace and although that was two less than manager Nuno Espirito Santo would have hoped for, it was still enough to switch places with Luton.
The Hatters found themselves ahead at Tottenham at roughly the same time Forest had gone behind to a Jean-Philippe Mateta goal at the City Ground and at that moment of time, the combination of results could not get any worse for Espirito Santo and his players.
However, Luton would eventually see their one-goal advantage overturned with two unanswered strikes by Spurs and a Chris Wood goal just past the hour would then see parity restored against Palace and a point worth of profit when compared to the nearest relegation rivals.
A combination of results that means it is Forest who start this midweek round of Premier League fixtures with a better goal difference than Rob Edwards’ men and it is this tiebreaker that is keeping last season’s Championship playoff winners on the wrong side of the dotted relegation line.
That stalemate with Palace now means it is no win in five for Nottingham’s finest and although their last two league outings have ended in draws, a maximum return is going to be needed sooner rather than later.
No sooner than Tuesday night and with visitors Fulham having not a lot to play for between now and the rest of the Premier League season, the Cottagers may just provide the perfect level of opposition.
Any feint European hopes that Marco Silva’s men would have had disappeared at the weekend as they could only manage a draw at Sheffield United. Admittedly it was a point earned after being 3-1 down in the second half, but on the basis of these two clubs it must be considered as two dropped.
A draw that means Fulham come to the River Trent lying 12th in the table and although there are five points between themselves and West Ham five places above, the pack of teams that the West London outfit have to cut through may be too congested.
Therefore, there could be a sense of on the beach when it comes to this visiting Fulham side and although they are not going to make a public display of waving the white flag, their intensity may be dialed down a notch or two.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with the reasoning made above, I am going to back Nottingham Forest to win but both teams to score on Tuesday night. An outcome that is currently priced at odds of 15/4.
