Time To Split

If Rangers are to win this season’s edition of the Scottish Premiership, they will have to be faultless from here on in.

A Perfect Run

After the Scottish Premiership took last weekend off, the 12 top tier teams are back in action and with the end of season split phase now active, the race for the title, the quest for European football and the battle to stay up now being in earnest.

Of those three subplots that are running through the Premiership, two of them interconnect on Sunday and with European hopefuls St Mirren playing host to championship hopefuls Rangers, one or both teams could be knocked off their plotted course.

For hosts St Mirren, they approach the weekend fully refreshed after last week’s hiatus and they do so while lying fifth in the table and thanks to their opponents and the other Glasgow giant both reaching this season’s FA Cup final, it means fifth place will pay out a European prize.

A position that St Mirren currently possess with a two-point gap over Dundee in sixth and with Kilmarnock all but assured fourth for their own efforts throughout the campaign, it looks set to be a two-horse race for the final continental invite.

At the same time, it is the usual two-horse race in terms of the title and after a miserable end to the regular phase of the Premiership season, Rangers did at least make light work of Hearts in last Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.

After a shock defeat at Ross County a fortnight ago was then followed up by a tame goalless draw at Dundee, the championship pendulum that was firmly in the Ibrox camp has now swung firmly into Celtic Park.

Whereas Rangers should have been starting the split at the top of the league ladder, they now find themselves on only the second rung instead and not only are they three points off the pace, but they also possess a worse goal difference.

A scenario that means Philippe Clement’s men may have to win every game of their five remaining to be crowned champions but even then, it still might not be enough to topple Brendan Rodgers’ men at the other end of the city.

At the same time, this title race is not truly over until it is declared officially done and with enough twists and turns taking place in the past month alone, Rangers will want to avoid slipping up on another league banana skin at the weekend.

But now it is time for the first of my two tips and after their confidence boosting cup win last Sunday, I am backing Rangers to win to by a two-goal margin. This positive outcome for the Ibrox outfit is priced at 10/3.

In addition to this, I am going to back Rangers captain James Tavernier to lead from example and what better way to do that than by bagging a brace at the SMiSA Stadium. Two goals for three points and this pays out a tempting price of 12/1.
