Five Flat meetings provide Friday’s horse racing action in Britain, three in the afternoon and two in the evening. Today’s horse racing tips feature selections from the cards at Musselburgh in the afternoon and Haydock in the evening.
“Tip of the Day” - Ravenscraig Castle (2.40pm Musselburgh) - 7/2 with 888Sport
Back over his best trip, Iain Jardine’s talented grey can open his account for the season in this Class 3 handicap.
2.40pm Musselburgh. 1m 6f
Our Tip: Ravenscraig Castle (Nap) - 7/2 with 888Sport
The Charlie & Mark Johnston-trained Happy, narrowly beaten at Sandown on his most recent start, is expected to take the field along for this 1m 6f contest. The mount of Jason Hart has been running consistently well since winning at Beverley on his reappearance back in April and should put in another bold effort. But the four-year-old gelding may have to settle for the runner-up spot once again, on this occasion behind Ravenscraig Castle from the Iain Jardine stable.
The grey, third in a Heritage Handicap at last season’s York Ebor meeting over today’s trip, ran much better than his finishing position of ninth in last month’s historic Old Newton Cup at Haydock would indicate.
Andrew Mullens’ mount took the lead with two furlongs to run but could not quicken when challenged inside the closing stages of that mile and a half handicap. Back over this two furlong longer trip, Ravenscraig Castle makes plenty of appeal off his lowest mark of the season.
5.42pm Haydock. 6f
Our Tip: Palifico (Longshot) - 12/1 with bet365
Apart from likely market leader Dreams Of Thunder, most of the runners for this 6f sprint handicap haven’t exactly been setting the world alight recently, including Palifico who finished last at Haydock on her first start since joining trainer Patrick Morris from Jane Chapple-Hyam in June.
The mount of Connor Murtagh was sent off at odds of 66/1 for that race, just days after joining her present handler, which suggested that little was expected from the filly on that occasion, especially over that distance of seven furlongs on testing ground
With that run under her belt and over a furlong shorter trip, Palifico could prove the value bet of the race if able to reproduce her best all-weather form of earlier in the year.
8.37pm Haydock. 1m 3 1/2f
Our Tip: Atacama Desert (Nb) - 4/1 with William Hill
The hat-trick seeking Molinari and course winner Colinton both hold strong claims in this extended 1m 3f contest. The horse who makes most appeal however is the Kevin Frost-trained Atacama Desert.
This will be just the seventh career start, the third on turf, for David Allen’s mount who ran his best race to date when second of 17 over today’s course and distance back in May.
Fancied to go one better at Chester last month, the four-year-old gelding could never get into a challenging position but stayed on steadily to be beaten less than three lengths.
Back on a more conventional track and off an attractive mark of 69, the unexposed contender is fancied to open his account for connections.
