The meetings at Catterick and Nottingham provide the Flat horse racing action on Wednesday afternoon and we have two tips from the North Yorkshire racecourse and one from Colwick Park in Nottingham featuring the Fairfax Saddles Grassroots Series Finals.
“Tip of the Day” - Arclight (5.09pm Catterick) - 11/2 with bet365*
Sir Mark Prescott’s lightly-raced three-year-old has the potential to prove much better than her current mark of only 76 and is fancied to open her account for the season.
2.19pm Catterick, 5f - Castan (Next Best)
A closely-knit nursery headed by course and distance winner Let’s Go Hugo who made a good handicap debut when finishing a close third off today’s mark of 72 at Beverley last month. With jockey Harry Russell’s 3lb claim, the top weight looks sure to go well along with the promising Dark Crusade from the Paul Midgley stable. But after going close when runner-up on his last two starts, the Bryan Smart-trained CASTAN is fancied to go one better in the hands of rider Kevin Stott for the first time.
The Charming Thought gelding is closely matched with several of these on previous form but was possibly a little unlucky to be beaten a neck over course and distance last time after coming off second best in a bumping match leaving the stalls. The selection can use his good early pace to good effect from his draw in stall two and does not look harshly treated on a mark of 67.
2.45pm Nottingham, 6f - Aristobulus (Each Way) (Longshot)
A maximum field of 17 contenders for this Grassroots Series Sprint Final. While it is hard to rule out many of the runners, including last time out winners Danzan, Iris Dancer, King Of Tonga, Willoughby Bay, Phoenix Star and Monday’s Hamilton scorer Nearly A Gonna, the each-way value may lie with ARISTOBULUS (e.w.) from the stable of Mike Murphy & Michael Keady.
The three-year-old won two of his three starts as a juvenile, the second coming over today’s course and distance last August. Rob Hornby’s mount returned to Colwick Park for his reappearance, beating all bar winner King Of Jungle despite hanging badly close home.
After failing to get home twice over 7f on soft ground at Haydock, Aristobulus left trainer James Ferguson to join current connections last month, since when the Adaay gelding has been well beaten in a Yarmouth handicap. Unfancied at odds of 16/1, that was clearly a prep for this obvious target and at a double-figure price the 80-rated sprinter can outrun his odds.
5.09pm Catterick, 1m 4f - Arclight (Nap)
Bottom weight Eclipse De Lunar beat all bar Valley Of Flowers at Ayr’s Western meeting recently and has a good chance of going one better for trainer Tim Easterby off a mark only 1lb higher. We have yet to see the best of Sir Mark Prescott’s ARCLIGHT however and as with many runners from the stable, improve when stepping up in trip.
The filly won over a mile on her final of three outings as a juvenile before commencing her three-year-old career with decent efforts at Sandown (third) and Brighton (second) over trips of nine and ten furlongs respectively.
The daughter of Champs Elysees ran over this distance of 1m 4f at Leicester on her most recent start when finishing fifth, beaten three lengths, behind fellow rival Auntie Margaret. Arclight took a keen hold in the early stages of that race and after being outpaced at a crucial stage, stayed on again at the finish.
Providing jockey Thore Hammer Hansen has more luck in settling his mount on this occasion, the selection has the potential to prove much better than her current mark of 76.
