Charlie McCann Horse Racing Tips for Friday 29th July

It’s the fourth day at Goodwood, and Charlie also heads to Southwell for their evening fixture

1.50 Goodwood

Day 4 of Glorious Goodwood starts with one of the longest races on the calendar the two-and-a-half-mile handicap. The weights and the market are headed by Reshoun who ran two tremendous races at Royal Ascot over extreme distances before getting his head in front back at two miles at Newbury last time.

Jim Crowley has been in the plate for five of the 8-year-olds six career win in Britain and he keeps the ride this afternoon. He looks sure to go close but my two against the field are Arabescato and SUPER SUPERJACK with preference for the latter.

This is the each way selection’s first start at a trip in excess of 2m 1f but he has a record of three wins and two seconds at trips around two miles and he represents a yard – that of Milton Harris – who remain in excellent form. He carries just 8st 4lbs today and looks the value.

Recommendation: Super Superjack EW at 10/1 Ladbrokes 4 places

2.25 Goodwood

Berkshire Shadow finished a neck in front of BAYSIDE BOY in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, but he is taken to reverse the form with Ryan Moore taking over in the saddle for the first time.

The selection finished third in the Dewhurst and Vertem Futurity as a juvenile and his last four starts have been in Group 1 company since he landed the G2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster back in September. He met trouble in running at Ascot and I felt he would have finished ahead of the Andrew Balding trained colt with a clearer run.

The market is headed by Checkandchallenge who might have been a shade unfortunate not to win a Sandown handicap from a mark of 108 last time. He returns to Group company today having beaten just one home in the Guineas on his reappearance. That was not his form although he pulled too hard, received a bump at the furlong pole and wasn’t disgraced.

German raider Rocchigiani looked ready for a return to a mile when fifth in the Jersey Stakes last time and his second to Maljoom in the German Guineas was boosted when the winner looked an unlucky loser in the St James’s Palace Stakes when he finished ahead of both Berkshire Shadow and Bayside Boy.

Recommendation: Bayside Boy at 9/4 with Betfred

3.00 Goodwood

The Coral Golden Mile is one of the big betting races of the week and Wentworth back in 2013 was the last winner to come out of a double-figure stall.

Rebel Territory has form figures of 1-2 at Goodwood has a decent draw in stall nine and I have thrown a couple of quid each way on him earlier in the week. He has not raced since scoring at Sandown back in the spring having been pulled out of the Hunt Cup last month with a self-certificate/fast ground. If the ground remains no quicker than good, he ought to run a big race for the local yard of Amanda Perrett.

There are a number of horses who would be carrying more weight if this were not an early closing race, non more so than NOBLE DYNASTY who out up a career best performance at Newmarket last time and runs under a 3lb penalty. The handicapper has seen fit to put him up 9lbs which puts the selection 6lbs well-in. When you add a cracking draw in stall three then I do believe he will be tough to beat.

The only negative is the fact that Charlie Appleby’s lightly-raced four-year-old has a tremendous record fresh and we have to hope that he can back that run up following just a three-week break. The selection made all on the July course but is unlikely to get things his own way today although he is no one dimensional frontrunner given his two other career wins – from just seven starts – have come from off the pace.

Recommendation: Noble Dynasty at 10/3 with Bet365

Rebel’s Romance is another lightly-raced Godolphin owned 4-y-old market leader in the listed Glorious Stakes, and he showed that turf was no problem when running away with the listed Fred Archer Stakes at Newmarket last time. Well drawn, yard in form he must take the beating, but I do think there is a good race to be won with FANCY MAN and the Richard Hannon trained colt gets the each way nod.

The selection had been running well on polytrack earlier in the year and ran a terrific race under the steadier of 9st 12lbs in the Old Newton Cup reverting to grass last time. He has bits of form which suggest he has a bit to find with John Leeper and Foxes Tales, but I do think he has his optimum conditions this afternoon and I hope he can reward each way support.

Recommendation: Fancy Man EW at 8/1 with William Hill 4 places

7.35 Southwell

The evening action includes Galway and Newmarket, but I am interested in a couple on the all-weather at Southwell.

Rich King heads the market for Ed Bethell but I just wonder if the step up to 11f on a surface described as standard to slow will stretch the stamina of the last-time-out Haydock winner over ten furlongs when he had a William Haggas trained horse behind in second.

Haggas should know where he stands with regard to Rich King as he saddles THREE START this evening and I like the booking of Richard Kingscote for the gelding who finished well to go down by a nose at Sandown from a mark just 2lbs lower last month. There are all-weather winners in his pedigree, and I would be disappointed if he didn’t run a big race.

Recommendation: Three Start at 9/4 with William Hill

8.35 Southwell

The nap runs on tapeta at Southwell this evening where Chimed has been a beaten market leader for his last three starts going off at 11/8, 8/11 and 4/11. He must obviously show more at home than he does at the track, Richard Kingscote shuns Goodwood and Newmarket to take the ride and he is tongue-tied for the first time by Sir Michael Stoute.

That said I hope he sets the market for LA YAKEL who steps up in distance from a mile to 11f on his third start for William Haggas.

The selection – out of a 12f AW winner - stayed on in eye-catching fashion behind the top-class Secret State on debut and again looked in need of a step up in trip when third at Windsor last time when slowly away over a mile. The hope is that Paul Hanagan can get the selection into a decent position from stall three.

Recommendation: La Yakel at 5/6 with bet365
