News broke on Tuesday that Frankie Dettori had lost the ride on Stradivarius for Tuesdays Goodwood Cup although we are supposed to believe it is by “mutual consent.”
Earlier in the season when it was announced that Shadwell would no longer be sending horses to Sir Michael Stoute their racing manager insisted this was not a snub. If not a snub, then what was it? Hardly a vote of confidence?
Fast ground forecast at Sandown for their seven-race card. The feature race is the listed Star Stakes won by Dettori aboard the brilliant Inspiral 12 months ago. Of more interest to me from a betting perspective is the 10f fillies’ handicap for the classic generation.
Three of the five runners won last time out including top-weight After The Rain who has won her last three but has not been out since scoring at Ascot at the beginning of May. She has improved with each of her five career starts to date and remains open to further progress, but she is 6lbs higher in the ratings this afternoon and 13lbs if you consider the 7lbs claim, at the time, of leading apprentice Harry Davies.
AMANZOE is 10lbs higher than when scoring at Hamilton over their extended mile last time nut I hope the step up to 10f for the first time will bring about the necessary improvement. There are mixed messages from her breeding as to whether she will posses the necessary stamina for this additional couple of furlongs, but she hit the line hard in Scotland and she gets a narrow vote.
Recommendation: Amanzoe at 15/8 with William Hill
I was disappointed with the run of HODLER over C&D last time, but he has been ridden just once previously by today’s apprentice Ryan Sexton and the pair combined to score at Goodwood from just a 4lbs lower mark. Three-year-olds have carried the prize twice in the last three years and I think Jim Boyle’s gelding can maintain their good recent run.
Crystal Casque goes well at Sandown and is another ridden by a talented claimer – Callum Hutchinson. He looks a big danger.
Recommendation: Hodler at 7/2 with 888sport
There is a cracking handicap chase over three miles at Worcester and I hope to see GAME SOCKS go one better than when runner up over C&D last time on just his second start over fences. He only went down by three quarters of a length last time and would, in all probability, have prevailed had he not missed out the fourth last.
The handicapper has left him on the same mark and the hope is that he can find the necessary improvement to go one better with that experience under his belt. The Newland yard were closed down with an outbreak of equine herpes last month and they couldn’t be described as firing on all cylinders, but I do think the selection – a dual winner over timber – is potentially well treated over fences.
French import D’Jango has won his last two for David Pipe including over C&D last time from a 7lbs lower mark. He looks a worthy market leader, but I just favour Game Socks in a fascinating heat with all six holding realistic claims.
Recommendation: Game Socks at 9/4 with Coral
I thought HOTSPUR HARRY ran better than his finishing position would suggest over C&D last time and he could be overpriced this evening in the amateur jockeys’ handicap.
The ew recommendation ran a cracker under tonight’s pilot when runner up at York on his penultimate start – 3lbs higher today – and the pair did combine to win at Newcastle on tapeta last April from a 6lbs higher mark. He was beaten more than 5L here last time, but he was slowly away, and the form was boosted when the second won at Sandown last night.
Recommendation: Harry Hotspur EW at 9/1 with bet365 4 places
Sir Mark Prescott’s Heat And Dust did us a favour at Catterick yesterday and the hope is that his EAGLE’S WAY can follow up last week’s maiden handicap success at Brighton under a 6lbs penalty.
The gelded son of Gleneagles cost 95,000 guineas as a yearling and he is effectively 3lbs well-in as he has been raised 9lbs by the handicapper from the weekend.
The market leader Shimmering Sands is 4lbs well-in under his penalty having been raised 10lbs from the weekend for his own fluent Beverley success last month, but I favour the Newmarket raider who, at the time of writing, is entered for a Newcastle handicap on Saturday.
Recommendation: Eagle’s Way at 2/1 with Bet365
