Charlie McCann’s Horse Racing Tips for Friday 8th July

New London to give Boys In Blue another Newmarket winner

A very good start to the week with 8/1 and 3/1 winners and a double on the opening day of the July Cup meeting at Newmarket yesterday, but it would be fair to say that I will not be supporting a George Scott trained animal in the short term after the abject runs of Another Odyssey on Tuesday and Tribuna Uffizi at Bath on Wednesday; for whatever reason their running was too bad to be true.

Mark Johnston has saddled the winner of the valuable 10f handicap for three-year-olds seven times in the last nine years and he and son Charlie have booked Frankie Dettori for Knightswood who was last seen finishing sixth in the Golden Gates handicap at Royal Ascot last month. He looks more of a stayer to me but the yard’s record in the race suggests he is worth more than a second glance.

NEW LONDON (NAP) found the combination of 12f and soft ground too much at Chester when last seen back in May, but he had previously looked smart when easily beating Gosdens’ Aldous Huxley at Newmarket. The runner-up was beaten more than 2L but is now rated 101 having finished second in a listed race at Goodwood last time.

Back on fast ground New London looks potentially well treated from a mark of 99; who knows if his draw in stall one is a positive, but, in the hope that they come up the stands’ rail, I would be disappointed if this son of Dubawi did not run a big race.

The Haggas-trained Candleford has been raised 13lbs for turning the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes into a procession at Royal Ascot last month. He has been backed from 7/1 into 10/3 for this valuable bet365 sponsored handicap earlier in the week and looks the one to beat. The Ebor is likely to be his target at York next month with this race telling us if he has the stamina for that 1m 6f trip.

CONTACT is another unproven at the distance but was doing all his best work late on when nearly 8l behind the market leader at Ascot and he is 13lbs better off this afternoon.

The each-way recommendation has improved since finishing weakly over this distance at Haydock back in September and he goes very well for Ben Curtis.

Trawlerman was not alone in getting a poor ride from Frankie Dettori at the Royal meeting but stall one was a big negative on the round course, and he was not given a hard race when it was evident, he wouldn’t be troubling the judge. Dettori was back among the winners for Gosden on the July course yesterday, but it would appear Godolphin don’t want the Italian to ride Trawlerman today.

James Doyle takes over in the saddle with William Buick riding Alan King’s Epsom winner Midnights Legacy. The latter should not be dismissed lightly.

I’m looking forward to seeing Inspiral back in action in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes, but she makes no appeal at such prohibitive odds.

2.40pm York

The Group 3 Summer Stakes at York over 6f for fillies and mares is a cracker and my two against the field Flotus and HALA HALA ATHMANI are drawn in ten and one respectively and may not see each other until inside the final furlong.

Flotus was back to something like her brilliant juvenile form when third in the Commonwealth Cup last time when she had the each-way selection a couple of lengths back in seventh. Kevin Ryan’s filly was making her season debut at the Royal meeting and met trouble in running.

She has only had three career starts and few juveniles created a more favourable impression than she did at Carlisle on debut. I would have liked her to have been drawn nearer the front-running Flotus, but I do feel she can improve past the Crisford filly.

The returning Shelir should ensure a strong gallop in the competitive 7f handicap which should suit NORTHERN EXPRESS who is 4lbs higher than when scoring impressively over C&D last time for Michael Dods.

A good gallop is essential for the 4-year-old to chase, and he is taken to reverse earlier course form with top-weight Escobar on this faster ground. He gets on very well with jockey Paul Mulrennan and he has his optimum conditions this afternoon.
