Charlie McCann’s Horse Racing Tips for Tuesday 2nd August

A 20/1 shot each way at Ffos Las and Saffron Beach napped for Group 1 glory at Deauville

There is a lull in the racing calendar for the next couple of weeks with this week’s “highlights” the return of the Racing League on Thursday evening and the Shergar Cup on Saturday. Roll on York although there is Group 1 action on Sky Sports Racing from Deauville on Tuesday afternoon.

3.30 Ffos Las

There is rain forecast for south Wales and that would certainly suit GERT LUSH (ew) in the 10f handicap for Lambourn trainer Roger Teal.

The mare belied odds of 50/1 when finishing third at Newbury last time and that form has been franked by the subsequent successes of both the winner and second. Talented 5lbs apprentice Callum Hutchinson was in the plate at the Berkshire track, and he keeps the ride this afternoon.

The mare has never won at ten furlongs, but she is 5lbs below her last winning mark and showed she gets this trip last time. We had an 18/1 winner on Sunday, and I do think the opening 20/1 with William Hill is a shade too big.

The likely market leader is Albion Princess – in the colours of Brighton FC owner Tony Bloom – who was very well backed on handicap debut at Newmarket but could only finish fourth having been slowly away. She has been given the best part of six weeks to get over what was her seasonal debut, and a market move would be worth noting.

I remember being disappointed with the run of HARRAR at Nottingham when last seen back in June although I don’t think he was given the best of rides by Ryan Sexton. On reflection he faced an impossible task trying to lock horns with the progressive Mostly Cloudy who is now rated 22lbs higher in the weights.

The runner up at Colwick Park has also scored since and I hope to see Michael Bell’s three-year-old race a bit more prominently than was the case in the East Midlands.

Campese heads the market and looks the main danger given he can race from the same mark as when runner up over two miles here last time. Jockey Franny Norton is likely to ensure a decent gallop and I hope Dylan Hogan does not give the Johnston 3-y-old too much rope on the selection.l

There is British representation in the four Group races in France this afternoon beginning with Life Of Dreams in the 10f Group 3. William Buick takes the ride on the filly for Charlie Appleby, and I hope to see the champion jockey elect ride SAFFRON BEACH (Nap) to victory in the Group 1 Prix Rothschild over a mile.

Jane Chapple-Hyam’s 4-y-old carried a 5lbs penalty but still ran away with the G2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. The filly is likely to race prominently if not make the running and try and stretch the stamina of likely market rival Tenebrism who landed the 7f Prix Jean Prat here last month has been well held in her both starts over a mile, and I am not convinced it was a vintage Jean Prat last month.
