Charlie McCann’s Horse Racing Tips for Wednesday 20th July

Sir Mark Prescott to ambush the bookies once more?

In some forecasts there is the possibility of an isolated shower at Sandown for this evening’s card, but the likelihood is that conditions will remain on the fast side of good.

7.08pm Sandown

There should be a decent gallop in the 7f handicap with Damascus Finish and Autumn Festival confirmed front-runners in the field, and the hope is that this is the day that DOOLILY breaks her maiden tag.

The filly has yet to confirm the promise of her juvenile form so far this term, but she was just getting into contention when she had her run stopped on the far rail at Brighton last time. Having already been squeezed out at the start I think her run can be marked up, she has been dropped another couple of pounds for the run, and the stable’s conditional Georgia Dobie takes off a further 3lbs.

Reversion is fitted with cheekpieces for the first time by Alan King in colours more normally associated with the winter game. The gelding was beaten less than two lengths at Newbury last time and that form has already been franked - he represents a big danger.

I like the booking of William Buick for HAPPY who was beaten just a length-and-a-half when fourth over C&D from a 1lb higher mark last time despite running away with his jockey as the horse went out onto the far side of the track.

The selection has the worst of the draw, but I hope to see Buick get across to the lead as they passed the post with a circuit to go in this 1m 6f handicap.

Cherry Cola was given far too much to do over an inadequate trip last time, but she looks the main danger given her sole win came off this mark, at this distance last summer. Saffie Osborne takes over in the saddle for the first time and the mare should have the race run to suit.

4.15pm Catterick

I suggested last week that the height of summer is the time when Sir Mark Prescott usually moves up a gear and, at the time of writing, his last couple of runners have both struck gold.

One of those winners was HEAT AND DUST who ran away with a Brighton handicap last week when she powered clear by 5L and a 5lbs penalty will not stop her if she is in the same mood. She has been a bit keen in her races previously and would want a decent gallop to chase although that is not guaranteed with no confirmed pace in the contest.

Course winners Haven Lady and Dandy’s Angel are considered the main dangers in a good race although the selection looks potentially very well treated at present.

3.55pm Lingfield

The classic generation receive 11lbs weight-for-age over 12f at this stage of the season and there are three lightly-raced 3-y-olds taking on their elders in a competitive contest this afternoon.

The maiden Ocean Ruler has been raised 3lbs for finishing runner up here on his first start at the trip on Polytrack when he was allowed to dictate his own fractions. He is 3lbs worse off with Rampoldi Plan and I am not certain he will confirm the form with the Alan King-trained 3-y-old who is also without a win to his name.

The each-way vote, however, goes to AFTER EIGHT whose course record reads 2-1 and has never finished out of the first two in three starts on the all-weather. Andrew Balding’s colt disappointed at Windsor last time – the drift told its own story – but he has been dropped 1lb for that effort, Callum Hutchinson was in the saddle when he broke his maiden tag here back in March and he has a good draw in stall four.

There is no guaranteed pace in the race, and I wouldn’t want Ocean Ruler to get a soft lead. Party Ruler has a big weight, but he was an impressive winner over C&D last time and represents a danger to all. Granted a decent test I would be disappointed if After Eight did not run a very big race. He gets the each-way nod.

8.55pm Leicester

I hope it’s a good day for Prescott as the filly SNAP AMBUSH steps up in distance for her handicap debut in the competitive Leicester finale.

The selection cost £250,000 as a yearling and ran with promise on all three juvenile starts over 7-8f. By Almanzour, who has not been a great success at stud to date, the filly is out of a listed winner in France and is bred to be smart.

She looks the type who might run up a sequence and it might be significant that, at the time of writing, she has three turf entries on Thursday and one on Saturday on the all-weather at Newcastle. She is anything but thrown in on her juvenile form and has yet to race on turf, but the step up in distance is a plus and there seems no reason she won’t be as least as good on turf.

Bath winner Moonlit Cloud and Kinranna – Hollie Doyle takes over for the first time – are considered the main dangers in what promises to be a cracking handicap.
