Cheltenham Festival Tuesday - Ted’s Trixie
Ed has three selections for Day 1 of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival.
Recent rain has thrown connections and punters a googly, so it is worth bearing in mind that the ability to handle attritional conditions may be much more of a crucial factor than perhaps anything else.
2.50pm Ultima Handicap Chase - The Big Breakaway (Each Way)
Joe Tizzard’s eight-year-old THE BIG BREAKAWAY (EW) hasn’t perhaps lived up to the early potential he showed, but he has stamina in spades, so it is a case of the more rain the merrier for him. In fact his only win over fences to date came at this track on soft ground, and his overall form figures at Prestbury Park read 413.
If this turns into a real slog it will play right into his strengths as he has the ability to go close if he can put in a clear round. Last seen coming second in the Welsh National, his credentials for this thorough test is there for all to see. Brendan Powell takes the ride and he can hit the frame at least at double-figure odds.
Already advised: Threeunderthrufive, 25/1
4.10pm Mares’ Hurdle - Brandy Love (Each Way)
The Willie Mullins trained mare BRANDY LOVE (EW) solid each-way claims in what looks a golden renewal of this contest. She should have stripped a whole lot fitter for her outing at Punchestown last time when third to Queens Brook trying to concede 9lbs.
I don’t think it was a bad run in the circumstances, and the tight, right-handed nature of Punchestown’s Hurdle track wouldn’t have been much to her liking either.
Going left-handed will see her in better light and she has won on similar ground in the past. Her performance at Fairyhouse last season when destroying Love Envoi was spectacular, and she can fight it out with the Harry Fry trained mare who will be relishing underfoot conditions.
Already advised: Love Envoi, 8/1
4.50pm Boodles Handicap Hurdle - Metamorpheus (Each Way)
This is wide-open, I’m getting involved each-way with the Paul Nolan trained METAMORPHEUS (EW). Underfoot conditions won’t be a problem for him, as he showed when winning on his penultimate start at Punchestown.
Settling into life for in-form connections, he ran a bit of an eye-catching race when fifth behind Sir Allen at Naas last month and should be finely tuned for this. Sean Flanagan takes the ride and I wouldn’t be shocked if he had the scope to improve off a mark of 125.
