Czech Republic have now qualified for all all eight European Championships as an independent nation, reaching the final of Euro ‘96, having won the trophy 20 years earlier, courtesy of Antonín Panenka’s winning penalty; you may be familiar with his work!

Three summers ago, Czechia got all the way to the quarter-finals, hoping for a similarly lengthy run this time, and here is everything you need to know about Czech Republic at Euro 2024.

Czech Republic Euro 2024 Top Tip

Across the last four European Championships, Czechia have alternated between going out in the group stages and reaching the quarter-finals so, if that trend continues, they won’t be in Germany for very long.

That said, there are certainly winnable fixtures for them in Group F, so they’d be very disappointed to be going home after just three matches.

Czech Republic′s Road to Qualification

As alluded too, Czechia always qualify for the European Championships, and this cycle was no different, albeit they were made to work hard, finishing below Albania on head-to-head but, crucially, ending up above Poland.

Their sole defeat came in Tirana but it was a bruising one, smashed 3-0 by Albania, their joint-heaviest defeat in any qualifier since a mauling at Wembley in March 2019.

At home however, they proved to be strong, yielding ten points from four fixtures, most-notably steamrollering Poland 3-1, scoring twice inside the opening three minutes on a memorable night in Prague.

Following their comfortable 3-0 victory over Moldova in November, a result that mathematically made sure of a spot in Germany, Jaroslav Šilhavý announced his shock resignation as head coach, quitting after five years in charge.

He has since been appointed manager of Oman’s national team, no idea what could’ve motivated him to make this sudden career change, but this left the FAČR with a void to fill.

They decided to turn to the vastly experienced Ivan Hašek, who previously managed the national team five times in 2009, not losing any of these games, hoping his second stint will be a tad longer.

When are Czech Republic′s Euro 2024 games?

  • Group F - Portugal vs Czechia, 18 June
  • Group F - Georgia vs Czechia, 22 June
  • Group F - Czechia vs Turkey, 26 June

Czech Republic′s Road to the Final

Round of 16

  • If Czechia top Group F: they would face a third-place finisher from Group A, B or C in Frankfurt on 1 July.
  • If Czechia come second in Group F: they would face the winners of Group D in Leipzig on 2 July, most-likely France.
  • If Czechia advance in third in Group F: they would face either the winners of Group B in Köln on 30 June, or the winners of Group C in Gelsenkirchen on the same evening.

Quarter-finals

  • If Czechia top Group F: we’re projecting that they’ll face Netherlands in Hamburg on 5 July.
  • If Czechia come second in Group F: we’re projecting that they’ll face Belgium in Berlin on 6 July.

Semi-finals

  • If Czechia top Group F: we’re projecting that they’ll face Spain in Munich on 9 July.
  • If Czechia come second in Group F: we’re projecting that they’ll face England in Dortmund on 10 July.

Final

  • If Czechia top Group F: we’re projecting that they’ll face France.
  • If Czechia come second in Group F: we’re projecting that they’ll face Portugal.

Czech Republic’s Key Players

Vladimir Coufal- West Ham United right-back Vladimír Coufal is one of the most recognisable figures in this team, certainly to Premier League viewers, although his place at this tournament is currently in doubt.

Back in November, Coufal, as well as Jan Kuchta and Jakub Brabec, were kicked out of the squad after they were caught clubbing in Olomouc prior to the qualifier against Moldova.

Despite having started 12 of the previous 13 competitive games beforehand, Coufal was also not called up for March’s double-header of friendlies, so it remains to be seen if he’ll return in time for the Euros.

Tomas Soucek- His West Ham teammate certainly will be there, given that Tomáš Souček is his country’s captain, hoping to add to his 68 caps; only 13 men have won more for the Czech Republic.

Souček has started each of his team’s last 22 internationals, only sitting out one fixture since October 2020 and, as well as being a key figure in midfield, is also a goal-threat, having scored 12 times to date, including a hat-trick against Estonia, also on target in three successive qualifiers back in the autumn.

Patrik Schick- Only one man in this Czech squad has scored more international goals than the captain, but that is their main man in attack Patrik Schick.

Three summers ago, he was the joint-top scorer at Euro 2020 alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, netting five times, including a brace against Scotland at Hampden, the second of which, from the half-way line, won goal of the tournament.

Schick hasn’t featured in any competitive international since November 2022, on target during a 2-1 defeat in Switzerland, and has endured an injury-hit campaign with Bayer Leverkusen, although he’s fully-fit now, scoring crucial goals against Qarabağ recently, as die Schwarzroten chase an unlikely treble.

Czech Republic′s Euro 2024 FAQs

chat bubble

Have Czechia ever qualified for the European Championships before?

Yes. This'll be the Czechs' 11th appearance at a European Championships, qualifying for all 8 as an independent nation, most-recrently failing to qualify in 1992 when they were still Czechoslovakia.

chat bubble

Have Czechia ever won the European Championships before?

Yes! Czechoslovakia are one of only 10 nations to have won the European Championships, beating West Germany in the 1976 final on penalties at the Marakana.

chat bubble

Do Czechia have a good record against the Euro 2024 group stage opponents?

Czechia did beat Portugal at Euro '96, but have lost all four subsequent meetings, knocked out of both Euro 2008 and 2012 by the Portuguese.

In more bad news, the Czechs have lost each of their last three encounters with Türkiye, defeated 2-0 by them at Euro 2016.

Meanwhile, Czechia have never met Georgia in any match, although they'll make up for lost time by also going head-to-head twice in the UEFA Nations League later this year.

chat bubble

What are the odds for Czechia to win Euro 2024?

Czechia are priced at 150/1 to win the European Championships, and our advice would be to keep your money in your pocket because it ain't happening!
