Switzerland′s Road to Qualification
Since 2004, Switzerland have now qualified for 10 out of 11 major tournaments, with Euro 2012 the only one they have not appeared at since the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea Republic.
Given that, it’s no surprise to see Rossocrociati featuring in Germany this summer, although they were far from impressive during qualification.
After three games, Murat Yakın’s team were clear at the top of Group I with maximum points, but they then won only one of their seven subsequent fixtures, this a hard-fought victory over minnows Andorra in Sion. When Romania visited Lucerne last June, despite leading 2-0 going into the 88th minute, the Swiss collapsed, conceding twice in quick succession and throwing away two points.
This proved costly because, by the time the pair met again in Bucharest on the final matchday, a 1-0 win for Romania at Arena Națională saw them claim top spot, with Switzerland settling for second.
A pair of draws with Kosovo, as well as a 3-3 thriller against Belarus, in which they had to score twice at the death to salvage a draw in St. Gallen, are concerning, considering the low-level of these opponents.
Nevertheless, they did do enough to qualify, so it ultimately matters not, although there are signs that this team won’t be capable of competing with the continent’s best, so a group phase exit could be on the cards.

Switzerland’s Key Players
Yann Sommer- Currently with 88 caps to his name, Yann Sommer will move into the top 10 of Switzerland’s all-time appearances holders list by the end of the summer, hoping to join a 100 club that, currently, has just seven members.
Sommer has kept 23 clean sheets in 37 appearances for Internazionale in all competitions this season, a key figure as I Nerazzurri have secured a 20th Scudetto. In Serie A alone, he has 17 clean sheets to his name, while the single-season record in 21, jointly-held by five different goalkeepers, very much on track to smash a tally that’s stood for 55 years.
Given that we don’t think this Swiss team isn’t going to be very good, they’ll need Sommer to be on top form.
Granit Xhaka- Since his international debut, coming at Wembley in 2011, Xhaka has always been a consistent performer for Switzerland, featuring in each of their last 25 fixtures, but has gone to another level for his clubs the last two seasons.
First, with Arsenal, Mikel Arteta turned him into a free-scoring, box-to-box midfielder, netting nine times as the Gunners ended up second in the Premier League in 22/23. This year, under Xabi Alonso, Xhaka has been the central pillar for a Bayer Leverkusen side that’s going to win a first-ever Meisterschale and could end-up with a treble, scoring his first goal for die Schwarzroten during a crucial 2-1 home win over Mainz in February.
Xherdan Shaqiri- Xherdan Shaqiri still remains the creative hub of Switzerland’s attack. He now has 30 goals to his name, only three Swiss men have more, after curling home a free-kick during a friendly victory in Dublin in March.
Of these 30 goals, nine have come at major tournaments, with Xherdan Shaqiri one of only 50 men to score a World Cup hat-trick, bagging all three as his side smashed Honduras at Arena da Amazônia a decade ago and still only 32, Shaqiri is still the most dangerous player on this team.
