How It Began
Even though the Europa League is much younger when compared to its older Champions League sibling, it has a rich history behind it and one that comes courtesy of its former UEFA Cup legacy.
In a bid to boost Europe’s second tier competition, UEFA decided on a rebrand back in 2009 and since then, the Europa League has provided us with some thrilling football stories on a Thursday evening.
Of course, this competition is not just the domain of the continent’s secondary outfits and with eight Champions League teams dropping down into the knockout phase each season, it adds an additional element to proceedings in the New Year.
Previous Winners
When it comes to the Europa League era alone, Spanish dominance has been the order of the day in recent times and although Sevilla may have won a pair of UEFA Cup finals in its last few years of operation, they are no slouches in the competition’s latest iteration either.
After back-to-back successes in both the 2006 and 2007 UEFA Cup finals, their dominance of Europe’s secondary club competition had gone up a further notch by the time that a Europa League rebrand had taken place.
Because what is better than a repeat victory? Why of course, it is a threepeat and between 2014 and 2016 that is exactly what Sevilla achieved and after five winning final appearances in less than 10 years, their dominance has not stopped their either.
Add a 2020 success into the mix and the Andalusian outfit are now synonymous with either guise of this legendary competition and with their domestic counterparts, Atletico Madrid and Villarreal also winning in recent times, the Europa League has often resembled the Spanish Armada.
In 2022, the title went to Germany, with Frankfurt getting the better of Scottish club Rangers on penalties, to take home their second title, but Sevilla were back in 2023, beating Roma on penalties to lift the trophy once more.
UEFA Europa League Records & Stats

Past Winners Table
The Europa League might not be as prestigious as the Champions League, but past winners are certainly top class clubs. It’s been dominated by Spanish sides over the last few years.
