Coral Cup Tips

One of the biggest handicaps of the year and a puzzle to solve - our tipsters love nothing more than that!

All three have each-way fancies in the race - Ed Quigley with a 14/1 selection and Charlie McCann with a 7/1 tip, while you can check out the choice of Alan Kelly below!

Alan Kelly - Zanndabad (Each-Way)

One of the biggest ever gambles landed in this 2m 5f handicap came in 2003 courtesy of the Tony Martin-trained Xenophon. Backed as if defeat was out of the question, the 4/1 favourite came home a comfortable winner in the hands of jockey Mick Fitzgerald.

Despite having to race from 4lb out of the handicap, the shrewd trainer is represented by the lightly-raced Zanndabad on this occasion and it would be no surprise to see the mount of 3lb claimer Daniel King run a big race in receipt of weight from his 24 rivals.

The winner of four of his 13 starts on the Flat, all in his native France, the Iffraaj gelding showed his first signs of form over hurdles when finishing second in the Scottish County Handicap Hurdle at Musselburgh last month. The five-year-old has almost certainly been trained with this race in mind and at a best price 25/1 any support for Zanndabad should be taken very seriously.

Another horse trained specifically with this race in mind is last year’s winner Langer Dan. Harry Skelton’s mount is sure to leave some disappointing efforts this season behind him as the eight-year-old only comes to life around this time every year. Willie Mullins’ Sa Majeste could easily be thrown-in on his handicap debut, while Nicky Henderson will be going for his fifth win in the race this century and has three decent chances with First Street, Lucky Place and Doddiethegreat.

Jigoro could prove the best of the four Gordon Elliott runners, while Built By Ballymore from the Martin Brassil stable is just one more to add to a long short list.

Coral Cup Betting Odds

As is the norm with the Coral Cup, a competitive field of runners with many unexposed horses that have likely been laid out for the race.

Langer Dan won this last year for trainer Dan Skelton and is back down to the same handicap mark, while Sa Majeste, Lucky Place, and Built By Ballymore are others to consider in a wide-open betting contest.

What Happened Last Year?

Langer Dan landed the 2023 Coral Cup for trainer Dan Skelton, ridden by his brother Harry.

Sent off at 9/1, Langer Dan took the lead after the last flight and powered on up the famous Cheltenham hill to see off An Epic Song into 2nd place and Camprond in 3rd.
