Alan Kelly - Sacred Angel (Each-Way)

The 1000 Guineas has produced its fair share of shock results in recent years. With no outstanding contender for the 2024 renewal, another big-priced winner is more than a possibility. Having already suggested the Roger Varian-trained True Cyan (antepost), now a non-runner, I have also backed that horse’s stablemate Elmalka at 66/1.

An eye-catching third in Newbury’s Fred Darling, Silvestre De Sousa’s mount is more than ready for this step-up in trip. The other horse I think is overpriced at 66/1, despite some stamina doubts, is SACRED ANGEL from the Charlie Johnston stable. By Dark Angel and out of a Haatef mare, this one-mile trip is probably further than she wants to go. But at those huge odds, it is worth taking a chance on the Middleham outsider.

An easy winner of Ascot’s Group 3 Princess Margaret Stakes from Pretty Crystal (a 12/1 chance) as a juvenile, Jason Hart’s mount disappointed under very soft conditions in Deauville’s Prix Morny three weeks later before ending the season with a creditable third in the Cheveley Park. Back on today’s better ground, I can see Sacred Angel running a massive race from the front on a track that suits the fillies’ racing style.

Charlie McCann - Dance Sequence (Each-Way)

I was disappointed that DANCE SEQUENCE (Each-Way) could not go past Pretty Crystal in the Nell Gwyn on her reappearance, but she gave every indication that she would improve for the step up to a mile, and she gets a narrow vote in the 1,000 Guineas.

The Godolphin filly lost her unbeaten record in the Nell Gwyn, but I liked the way she finished her race and I was impressed with her narrow but conclusive win in the Oh So Sharp Stakes here as a juvenile. She was pushed out to 7/1 after her trial defeat but the best price on offer is 11/2 on Saturday morning. That is no more than fair.

In the absence of the injured Opera Singer, Aidan O’Brien relies on Fillies’ Mile winner Ylang Ylang, and she did well to overcome trouble in-running to score over course and distance back in October, albeit on soft ground. She is held by market rival Fallen Angel on Moyglare running at the Curragh the previous month, but connections insisted that was not her true running.

The French raider Ramatuelle is a fascinating contender. She, too, lost her prep race, and I wonder if this stiff mile will suit, but her second in the Morny was top-class juvenile form, and she didn’t look fully wound up for her trial. That said, Charlie Appleby should know where he stands with the French raider, given that his Romantic Style was the winner of the Prix Imprudence.
