Arsenal v Manchester United Match Preview
Although Arsenal are not out of the Carabao Cup, a 2-0 first leg defeat in their semi-final tie with Newcastle will be rather bruising and with a trip to Tyneside soon to take on rather high stakes, one route to Wembley could soon be blocked off.
Then again, as one route to the home of English football undergoes roadworks another could be opening up after being closed for the winter and just as soon as Carabao Cup action took place in midweek does FA Cup action arrive this weekend.
With that being said, the opposition that has been paired with Arsenal does not allow Mikel Arteta’s men a breather and although Manchester United may be an ailing force in this season’s Premier League, it would be far too easy to dismiss them when it comes to knockout competition.
Especially after such an impressive showing at Anfield last weekend and even though the expectation was that Manchester United’s performance against the current league leaders was going to be nothing short of a nightmare, it actually turned out to be a rather pleasant experience.
Pleasant after earning a share of the points, not only against a local rival that seems light years ahead of them right now but also because the single point after that 2-2 draw was the first that the Red Devils had picked up in four attempts.
While holding Liverpool to a draw on enemy territory would have also inadvertently done Sunday’s hosts a huge favour after Arsenal could only manage a share of the points at Brighton the night before.
A result that at the time may have felt like two points dropped but once Manchester United did their part, the only thing left to stew on was the penalty that was awarded to Brighton after Joao Pedro was headed by William Saliba instead of the French defender heading the ball.
Certainly controversy regarding Brighton’s gift from 12 yards but there was no real controversy attached to Newcastle’s win over Arsenal just three days later and although Mikel Arteta tried to deflect from this after the game, his comments regarding different balls seemed rather ludicrous.
Deflection tactic or not. Arsenal were simply undone by Newcastle’s two banks of five tactic after going two goals clear and the greater irony in this is that the shape on show from the Magpies is one that the Gunners have had plenty of success with in the past.
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with Arsenal having won six of the last FA Cup home matches with under 2.5 goals being scored. With that in mind, I am backing the home win and no more than two total goals at odds of 10/3 with bet365.
In addition to this, I am going to back Gabriel to score. It could be Jesus, it could even be Martinelli but this time around I am going to opt for Gabriel Magalhaes and to extract further value, I will be tipping the Arsenal defender to use his head at odds of 10/1 with Star Sports.
