Arsenal v PSG Match Preview
Being denied at the death 10 or so days ago, handing out late despair themselves last Saturday. A microcosm of Arsenal’s last two Premier League matches against Manchester City and Leicester and for all the recent domestic drama, the Gunners now switch their focus to the continent.
Focus that comes not only in the form of the Champions League’s second matchday of the season but also the visit of French giants PSG and with Luis Enrique’s men picking up a win during Matchday 1, they will be keen to extend their perfect start to proceedings.
A perfect start that got underway at the Parc des Princes a fortnight before and with Girona only being bested by a cruel injury time own goal from ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Paolo Gazzaniga, there is no doubt that PSG rode their luck on their way to victory.
However, you could also argue that Arsenal rode their luck in Bergamo later that same opening round of Champions League fixtures and with Atalanta being awarded a penalty, David Raya would make not one but two miraculous saves to make sure the game ended 0-0.
Then again, to say that Arsenal rode their luck in that moment arguably does Raya a huge disservice. The former Brentford stopper has been an integral part of the club’s early season form and were it not for his talents, their Champions League bid would have began with a loss.
A point on the European roads is not to be sniffed at, especially against last season’s Europa League winners and with 10 being suggested as the necessary number for automatic qualification, the Gunners only need to win three of their seven remaining league stage fixtures.
After six Premier League fixtures, Mikel Arteta’s men find themselves a point off the pace and their 4-2 win over Leicester only further compounds Manchester City’s draw at Newcastle earlier that same afternoon. Could the balance of premier power be shifting towards the capital?
While across the English Channel there is no such power shift as far as PSG are concerned and although they currently top Ligue 1 by goal difference alone, the Parisiens ability to find an extra gear in the New Year still makes them huge favourites to remain the kings of France.
Of course, it is kings of Europe that the club’s Qatari owners are desperate to be anointed and now that the megastar era is well and truly over, a more balanced team may allow the club a better chance of finally winning the Champions League
But now it is time for the first of my two tips and with the character that Arsenal have shown both home and abroad recently, I think they will have too much for PSG. Therefore, I am backing the home win and both teams to score at odds of 12/5
In addition to this, I am also going to opt for a statement win in North London. You will not get much bigger statements than a 3-1 Arsenal win at the Emirates and you will not get much bigger odds than the 14/1 that is currently being offered.
